DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

HOURS OF WORK: Weekdays, generally between 8:00 a.m. & 5:00 p.m., approximately 28 - 40 hours per week from March - October.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is inspection and enforcement work in securing compliance with codes, ordinances and regulations relating to refuse, litter, weeds, snow removal and associated property maintenance/sanitation issues in commercial districts.

The employee makes inspections in the field and performs related recordkeeping and public contact duties in the office. The employee is responsible for fully and accurately reporting all violations, providing education and instruction to the public and for taking official action to ensure compliance. Although the employee normally works independently on routine inspections, he/she consults with a superior on more difficult or unusual problems. Work is subject to general administrative review of accomplished results.

Employee interacts in a consistently pleasant and helpful manner to fellow employees, visitors, and citizens of the City of Dearborn and demonstrates the highest standards of internal and external customer service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Walks and drives commercial areas of the City to inspect for compliance with codes, ordinance and regulations relating to refuse, litter, weeds, snow removal and associated property maintenance/sanitation issues.

  • Educates violators to ensure their understanding of City standards and to encourage compliance.

  • Investigates complaints and follows-up on violations.

  • Issues written warnings and formal citations.

  • Coordinates enforcement activities with other departments as appropriate.

  • Works with supervisors to utilize contracted services to address compliance issues.

  • Responds to citizen questions and complaints in person and on the phone.

  • Maintains extensive notes, documentation and records and prepares related correspondence.

  • Prepares materials for court prosecution of ordinance violators, and appears in court in such prosecutions.

  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Extensive customer service or public contact experience; investigation or inspection experience preferred.

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent preferably supplemented by related training in investigation or inspection fields.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Mustbe able to operate basic computer programs including Microsoft Word and email. Must submit to a criminal history check, drug screen, and physical. Must possess a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record and willingness to operate own motor vehicle.
