This is technical engineering work involving inspection of a wide variety of public works, utilities, and building construction projects. Employees in this class are responsible for inspecting technical road, drainage, marine or utility projects. Duties require detailed knowledge of road, building, bridge, dock and seawall design, and construction, water distribution and backflow prevention, sewer transmission, and related projects and procedures. An incumbent may continue to perform Field Inspector 1 functions for an indefinite time or non-competitively advance to Field Inspector 2 at the discretion of the appointing authority. The position reports to a manager, supervisor or designee.

What Would You Do?

  • Inspects complex road construction, checks plans for proposed construction, confers with builders to ensure county standards are met and makes written reports.

  • Assists contractors and engineers in interpreting county plans and specifications, checks layout and grades of structures or materials, makes arrangements for tests by approved laboratories, makes progress reports and updates plans to show field changes reflecting final as-builts.

  • Reviews site plans with contractors prior to construction and inspects work for compliance with approved plans, specifications, and requirements.

  • Inspects sewer construction projects, checks and verifies vertical and horizontal controls conform to construction plans and inspects to ensure construction practices and workmanship meet specifications.

  • Inspects and reports on commercial and residential cross connections, determines locations for water taps, meters and backflow prevention devices and maintains files on backflow prevention device tests.

  • Inspects water and sewer line installations performed by contractors to verify work and materials meet county requirements and utility system specifications.

  • Inspects private utility installations to determine compliance with approved permits including telephone, electricity, water, gas, backflow prevention and cross connection, and sewage or storm sewer piping.

  • Acts as liaison between designers and contractors for building projects, reviews plans and specifications to ensure accuracy in construction and takes samples of construction materials for laboratory tests.

  • Reviews dock construction permit applications and makes field inspections of dock construction to ensure compliance with regulations.

  • Conducts periodic inspection of dredge or fill projects and investigates and reports on violations of regulations pertaining to dredge and fill activities.

  • Inspects utility installations for compliance with approved permits and plans including telephone, television, electricity, water, reclaim water, gas, sewage, and storm sewer piping.

  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

What Do You Need To Have?

  • 2 years' experience in public works infrastructure construction (roadway, curb, sidewalk, etc.) or public utilities construction (watermains, sewer distribution systems, force mains, lift stations, etc.), that requires the candidate to demonstrate and apply occupation related technology including computer applications and software to complete regular and special assignments, which includes regulatory compliance with permits for environmental and right of way utilization; or

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.

  • Employee may be required to work nights, weekends, even holidays and/or flexible schedules (greater than 8 hours/day).

  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Highly Desirable

  • Certifications in Intermediate MOT (or higher) and FDOT CTQP (ACI, Earthwork Level 1, Asphalt Paving Level 1, Drill Shaft, etc.)
