We are looking to add a new member to our manufacturing team at the Lightwave Technology Center in Blacksburg Virginia. Our innovative team manufactures a variety of fiber optic sensing products that detect changes in temperature, pressure, strain, and acoustic signals. We use these products in a variety of applications to monitor oil and gas extraction, carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), geothermal energy production, and more!

As a Fiber Optic Manufacturing Technician at Baker Hughes, you will have the opportunity to learn about these technologies and become proficient at assembling, testing, and troubleshooting. Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and monitor the optical fiber draw tower to ensure continuous and efficient production.

  • Perform setup and adjustments on the draw tower to meet production specifications and quality standards as well as checks to ensure product specifications are met.

  • Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of the draw tower equipment.

  • Inspect and measure optical fibers to ensure they meet the required specifications and quality standards.

  • Maintain accurate production records as well as logs and production travelers to build complex assemblies.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve any issues affecting fiber quality, improve product designs and optimize our workflow.

  • Follow safety protocols and written procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance production efficiency and quality.

  • Assist in configuring, preparing, and maintaining equipment.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in a related field is preferred. Certification in optics or related field is a plus.

  • Proven experience operating & maintaining industrial machinery, preferably in the optical fiber industry (manufacturing, assembly & testing) as well as electric components, sensors, interrogation systems & wiring harnesses. Experience in handling chemicals and pressurized vessels is a plus.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong knowledge of optical components, tools, and test equipment along with ability to perform component-level troubleshooting.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.

  • Basic understanding of computer systems and software used in production settings.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills - willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.

  • Physically fit to lift loads, stand, and walk around for extended periods of time.

  • Friday, 8:00 a.m.

  • 5:00 p.m.
