The essential duties for this job include:

  • Assists in ensuring strict compliance with Federal Waters Pollution Control Act and Federal Communications Commission Communications Act of 1934.

  • Assists in standing lookout watch in high-density traffic areas under all weather and sea conditions and in accordance with the Inland Navigation Rules of the Road and the rules of good seamanship.

  • Assists in the daily inspection of the operating condition of all emergency fire fighting and lifesaving and equipment on the vessel.

  • Attends to passenger needs and performs cleanup and maintenance duties as required or directed.

  • Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises.

  • Performs deck evolutions, operates safety gates and vehicle loading ramps, directs, spaces, parks and blocks vehicles and maintains security about the decks.

  • Pumps out bilges as needed.

  • Reads all gauges and fluid levels in engine room and reports any problems to the captain.

  • Reports all observations, actions and/or matters affecting the stability, operational capacity, safety and welfare of the vessel, crew, passengers, vehicles and other public properties to the captain or first deckhand.

  • Serves as secondary enforcement authority for State Regulations Governing Operations of the Ferries.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

  • Safety Impact Certificate

  • Vessel Crew Member Certificate

  • Valid Driver's License

Safety Impact Certificate and Vessel Crew Member Certificate are not required at the time of application. Both certifications will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Other Conditions:

  • This is a Safety Impact and Vessel Crew Member position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Conditions of Employment

Standards of Employment

  • Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and Vessel Crewmember certification(s) will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety impact and vessel crewmember positions. Commercial drivers, safety impact employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.

  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

  • Must be able to report for duty within 1 hour of notification on a 24-hour basis.

  • Driver's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

  • External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.

  • External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.

  • Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.

  • If hired, employee must provide document(s) within three (3) days of hire date that establish identity and employment eligibility. A complete list of acceptable documents is on file with the local Texas Workforce Commission office or http://www.twc.state.tx.us/.

  • As part of its employment process, TxDOT may procure or have prepared a criminal background check. An applicant with an unsatisfactory criminal background check report is ineligible to be hired for the position for which the report is initiated.
