A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for federally licensed marine first-class Pilots for vessels of unlimited tonnage to board U.S.-flagged vessels that may require pilot escort (due to vessel displacement or length) into and out of ports in the New England region.
Primary Function:
Federally Licensed Pilots standby, and in the event of local Pilot unavailability will board US-flagged vessels, providing professional guidance to assist the master/captain in the safe navigation to and from port. Pilots will potentially deploy out of ports in RI and/or MA and will be on-call for the duration of this project, available 24/7 as needed. On-call rotations will be arranged.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Maintain availability for the duration of project (approximately May-December 2024), ready to deploy with minimal to no notice
Have applicable U.S. Coast Guard pilotage endorsements for at minimum Narragansett Bay and Providence River from NB Buoy to Providence, RI, via the East or West Passage and Davisville and sufficient trips to secure unlimited tonnage / no tonnage restrictions.
Deploy on US-flagged vessels to provide safe pilotage during dockage and travel to and from port as needed, taking into account known route dangers (lighthouses, buoys, submerged features, etc.), tides and currents, and weather forecasts.
Ensure that vessel master has understanding and implementation of USCG Rules of the Road, proper vessel safety lighting, sufficient lookouts posted, proper VHF procedures and security calls are made, and that safe speed is maintained.
Compensation: Salary to be negotiated based on experience as a federally licensed First Class Pilot. Travel expenses to and from ports not reimbursed. This is a fulltime temporary position. For long term placements on AIS projects, the eligibility threshold for the AIS benefits package is reached after 90 days. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
Minimum Qualifications:
Meet or exceed the requirements of 46 CFR § 15.812
Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with National First-Class Pilot Endorsement for vessels of unlimited tonnage
Offshore medical clearance (OGUK, CG-719K, or equivalent)
Offshore safety certification (STCW, BOSIET, GWO, etc.)
Possession of a valid TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Card)
Must have authorization to work within the US
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to work under short notice (12-hour or less)
Candidate must be local or regional to Southern New England
Ability to work independently with good judgement
