The Advanced Engineering Department utilizes the state-of-art digital & virtual engineering tools to enable and accelerate the commercialization and innovation of plastic containers a critical element in delivering Amcor's industrial leading light weight designs, time-to-market, and technical breakthroughs. The technical know-how and unique integrated workflow provide full range capabilities from design concept to physical prototype, empowered by advanced Design (3D CAD), Analysis (FEA/CFD), Information Management (PLM), and Rapid Prototyping (3D printing/Rapid CNC) technologies.
In this position the FEA scientist will play a leadership role in using modeling and simulation (FEA/CFD) to enable and accelerate innovation and commercialization of new plastic container products. This person will utilize CAE tools to develop structurally efficient lightweight packaging, innovative new concepts, improve high volume manufacturing process; and establish standardized and automated analysis workflow. This person will conduct internal research as well as lead external collaboration with industrial and academic experts to develop a wide-range of state-of-art technologies in analysis workflow automation, optimization, polymer constitutive model, thermo-mechanical/fluid-structure-interaction multiphysics simulation, and blow modeling simulation; as well as material testing and product testing methods for material mechanical property characterization and simulation result validation. In this key position, the candidate will have opportunities to work closely with Director of Advanced Engineering and Directors of Product Development to establish and realize short term and long term CAE strategies for the company.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Utilize in-house simulation methodologies to analyze and improve container design and performance; conduct virtual DOE and optimization; participate in the design of plastic container, finishing, injection mold, and blow mold; Manage and organize product design/analysis information via PLM system.
Provide scientific insight and problem solving for complex container design and manufacturing problem in the field of structural, thermo-mechanical, fluid mechanics, and fracture mechanics.
Simplify complex multiphysics problems into relevant and realistic models to provide reasonable and meaningful insight within time and cost constraints to solve the problems.
Utilize CAE/FEA/CFD tools such as CATIA, Abaqus, and Hypermesh.
Provide understanding of the complex nonlinear behavior in polymers such as PET, HDPE, PP; develop material constitutive models for them (below and above Tg), and associated testing methods.
Lead, coordinate, and develop testing methods and experimental correlation with simulation.
Develop standard and automated simulation workflow through scripting and commercial tools (such as iSight, Hyperstudy, or similar).
Understand design requirements, product development methods, and manufacturing methods to develop new modeling techniques and new areas of applications.
Establish and maintain close relationship with design engineers, product engineers, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, and material scientists. Deliver team project by working closely across organizations.
Participate and represent Amcor in professional conferences; publish articles in technical and trade journals
Document design and simulation results in presentations. Document method development in presentations and technical memos. Present methodologies and results internally, to senior management, and externally to customers.
Education: graduate degreee (MS/PhD) in relavent engineering field preferred ( Mechanical/Civil/Structural/Aerospace)
Recommend at least 3-5 years of industrial R&D experience, or 5-8 years of combined academic and industrial R&D experience in the area of mechanics and numerical simulation. More senior level appointment possible commensurate with candidate's experience and qualification
Expertise in principles of solid mechanics, stress analysis, and heat transfer/fluid flow
Industrial problem solving experience and product design utilizing simulation tools
Expertise in use of tools from Simulia and Altair, like Abaqus, Hypermesh, iSight, Hyperstudy
Requires 3+ years of direct experience in Finite Element Analysis, utilizing Abaqus as the primary solver
Expertise in polymer's mechanical behavior, mechanical property testing, and constitutive models
Hand-on experience with mechanical testing, such as Instron systems.
Some experience with 3D CAD system, such as CATIA
Programming skills in such as visual basic, python, Tcl, etc. would be very beneficial.
Good documentation, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
Capable of and comfortable with self-organizing and working under competing priorities while maintaining high quality and timely result delivery
Self-motivated and results oriented thought leader with a great deal of autonomy
