This advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Polk Correctional Institution in the Maintenance Unit.

Specific Duties

This working position is responsible for the installation and repair of plumbing and associated systems, LP Gas supply, Waste Collection and Potable Water necessary to operate a major institution. This position will also provide on the job training to those inmates he/she supervises in plumbing and associated systems.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Reading all blueprints related to tasks assigned.

  • Following approved methods and procedures, provisions of all required local, state or federal codes, tool, safety and established security procedures.

  • Performing repairs and preventive maintenance as directed by the Maintenance Superintendent.

  • Completing assigned activities.

  • Organizing and scheduling work to be performed and requisitions necessary supplies to ensure completion of tasks in a timely manner and adheres to the maintenance of the institution.

  • Preparing reports of progress and performance for assigned inmates for the use by the inmate's classifications team in measuring and determining the rehabilitative progress of the assigned inmate and provides personal counseling when necessary for inmates consistent with motivational needs and the development of a positive approach to rehabilitation efforts.

  • Maintaining custody and control of inmates assigned under the supervision of the position in accordance with accountability requirements for inmates outlined in the operational procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)

  • Knowledge of procedures for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and heating fixtures and accessories.

  • Skills in using pipe cutters, reamers, threading machines, and other specialized tools and equipment.

  • Ability to work in a training capacity with people in individual and group settings

  • Ability to collect, record, and evaluate data relating to the training of individuals.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and other instructional material.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to speak clearly and correctly to individuals and groups.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to vocational instruction.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or its equivalent and at least one (1) year of experience in the plumbing trade OR four or more years of experience in the plumbing trade (College or vocational/technical training in the above listed trade can substitute for the required experience).
  • A valid Driver's license.

Position Purpose: After successfully completing the job and equipment review / training and safety program, the Equipment Operator (hereafter referred to as EO) will be prepared to move, load and handle materials in the plant/terminal/quarry area with the use of heavy equipment. The EO will use large earth-moving machines, such as bulldozers, backhoes, excavators and front-end loaders and/or other huge machinery to lift, haul, push, roll, load and move aggregate and aggregate related materials. Communication between the EO, dispatcher and yard/quarry foreman/manager is crucial, so job briefings will be held throughout each day to insure safety and efficiency. The EO must also have a good understanding of the quarry/plant/terminal layout in order to assess the work that needs to be done and operate quickly, safely and efficiently. The most important duty of the EO is to run the huge, expensive machines safely and capably. Before each workday, the EO makes sure the machinery is well lubricated and tires, belts, pumps, hoses and cables are in good condition. While operating the machine, the EO must always watch out for the people and other equipment nearby. During the daily routine of the EO, difficult maneuvers are often performed in tricky situations, such as grading on steep embankments or operating around other large equipment (large trucks, locomotives, railcars, etc.). In addition, the EO must always be aware of pedestrians and other workers in the terminal area. For these reasons, the EO must be cool and collected in situations that might rattle other people Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities: * Operate backhoes, bulldozers, loaders and/or other heavy equipment to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel or other materials. * Operate heavy equipment to move, load and unload materials into/out of railcars and/or other modes of transportation. * Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and clean, lubricate and refill equipment. * Assist Quarry/Yard Manager and/or Quarry/Yard Supervisor in coordinating materials handling and equipment usage. * Be able to perform the following specific tasks: * Operate general construction equipment at the terminal when given training. * Required to lift 50 pounds. * Complete miscellaneous jobs according to instructions given. * Knowledge of the use and capabilities of heavy equipment and machinery used in maintenance and construction tasks. * Knowledge of both traffic and safety rules. * Knowledge of the practices and techniques applied to the safe operation of heavy equipment. * Ability to keep records and make oral or written reports. * Ability to make simple arithmetic computations. * Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. * Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time. * Ability to climb, bend, stoop, and squat frequently. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. * Ability to work long hours out-of-doors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions. * Ability to communicate effectively using speaking, hearing, writing, and vision skills.
