Growing Places is a 501c3 nonprofit organization serving the most underserved communities in North Central MA with a specific focus on Clinton, Fitchburg, Gardner, Leominster and Winchendon. Our mission is to inspire and connect the North Central MA community to create equitable access to healthy food and environmental sustainability through education, collaboration and advocacy.

With some of the highest chronic disease rates in the state, Growing Places seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of residents by addressing the social determinants of health and connecting our local food system. Managing more than 300 raised-bed community gardens and multiple farmers markets that foster equity and inclusion primary programs include: Community Teaching Gardens; Seed to Community volunteer produce donations to local food assistance programs; youth education during and after the bells; farmers market management; a mobile farmers market; Learn and Grow workshops and Greening the Gateway Cities tree planting.

Growing Places is looking for a part-time seasonal Farmers Market Coordinator to plan and implement our farmers markets (Fitchburg, Leominster, Mount Wachusett Community College and Heywood Hospital) and mobile farmers market (small trailer attached to full-size pick-up truck) focused in North Central MAs food desert communities (Clinton, Fitchburg, Gardner, Leominster and Winchendon).

Duties include:

Farmers and Mobile Markets

  • Responsible for ensuring that Growing Places farmers markets and mobile market display a high level of quality, consistency and cultural competency for community members
  • Coordinate market logistics on and off site (vendors, schedules, signage, applications, payment)
  • Liaise with appropriate city departments to ensure all permits and policies are in order
  • Enforce market policies and guidelines with vendors, conduct farm tours and other activities to facilitate market transparency
  • Manage Growing Places farmers market stand and mobile market on market days according to market policies and guidelines
  • Coordinate nutrition benefits program acceptance (SNAP/HIP, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Coupons) at all markets and with vendors
  • Manage volunteers to support markets and vendors

Education and Awareness

  • Work with Growing Places Development Manager to promote markets via website, social media, traditional print and partners
  • Promote nutrition benefits program acceptance at markets to reach target populations
  • Work with Growing Places Development Manager and collaborate with community partners to host activities / events and increase market participation
  • Identify and integrate additional community resources and cooking demos to enhance the markets experience and mobile market as needed
  • Disseminate information at markets (nutrition, health, nutrition benefits, recipes, sustainability) aligned with Growing Places mission
  • Ensure safety standards are upheld at all times; participate in ServSafe Certification
  • Implement data tracking measures at markets according to Growing Places and funders policies and guidelines
  • Create reports for bookkeeper and evaluation / program reporting
  • Conduct market surveys with customers

Transportation and Distribution

  • Coordinate with Growing Places staff to inventory produce and place orders with local producers and distributers
  • Coordinate produce pick-up from local producers and distributors based on orders
  • Distribute CSA Meal Kits through the mobile market

Data and Reporting

Other duties as assigned


  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English given first preference
  • Requires lifting of up to 50 pounds
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Passion for promoting and supporting the local food system
  • Basic knowledge of ordering, receiving and selling local food
  • Familiarity with and ability to navigate North Central MA
  • Massachusetts Drivers License
  • ServSafe Certification a plus


$14/hour at average of 20 to 25 hours per week during growing season; potential for hours during non-growing season. Must be able to attend evening and weekend markets.

This includes but is not limited to scraping and traying products, cubing steaks, grinding ground meats and cutting and processing meat according to Standard Practice Manual. 2.Perform meat associate responsibilities as directed. 3.Provide outstanding customer service. Communicate with and assist customers in selection of product. 4.Identify, wrap, price, and weigh all meat department items in accordance with specified procedures outlined by standard practice. 5.Stock the fresh, frozen, and self-service cases using proper rotation procedures. 6.Receive any meat delivery, code, rotate, and put in appropriate storage area. 7.Wash, rinse and sanitize all cases, wrap stations/area, scaling equipment, cooler, cutting room, including disassembling and re-assembling equipment therein. 8.Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations. Duties and Responsibilities: 1.Comply with all company policies, procedures, and government regulations. 2.Meet or exceed all applicable Management Planning guidelines once training is complete. 3.Treat all co-workers with fairness, dignity, and respect. 4.Develop product knowledge in all areas of the meat department including cooking procedures. 5.Make price changes and maintain correct price books and scales as directed. 6.Assist in special projects and perform other functions as assigned by supervisor. 7.Assist in training of other associates when assigned after identified as Level 2 trainer. 8.Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times; comply with company personal appearance policy. 9.Maintain solid communication in the department and throughout the organization. 10.Support company safety standards. Communicate any needed equipment repairs or maintenance work needed. Keep work area free from debris and safety hazards. 11.Observe and maintain company sanitation and food safety standards. 12.Perform all other duties as assigned. Requirements Qualifications: This Apprentice must be willing to "Float in D20" after training is complete. * Good interpersonal skills and desire to work in a team environment. * Must meet minimum age requirements. * Effective customer service and communication skills. * Successful experience as a meat associate or previous meat cutting experience preferred. * Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn multiple tasks and technical requirements of the job. Physical Requirements: 1.Lift cases or packages of meat products weighing 1-40 lb. frequently and 100 lb. on occasion. 2.Meet established volume activity standards. 3.Stand or walk 100% of the time while working in temperatures of 45 degrees F the majority of the time. 4.Perform repetitive grasping, twisting, reaching and hand/arm motions as the product is identified, wrapped, priced and weighed. 5.Use hands continuously to feel objects, use tools and equipment to cut and prepare meat products. 6.Be able to handle a variety of substances associated with cleaning materials, packaging materials and meat products. 7.Frequent bending.
