GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Programs for Exceptional Children, the position is responsible for serving as a special education parent/family liaison who will collaborate with school staff and families, as well as communicate with regional parent centers staffed by the state parent and training information center. The position is responsible for developing and implementing outreach and support to parents of children with disabilities to help them understand the special education process, including options available to resolve disputes

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as a resource to parents and families to understand and engage in the referral, evaluation, reevaluation, and eligibility process if they suspect their child has a disability.

  • Serve as a resource to parents and families to understand and engage in the IEP process.

  • Address email and calls from new parents to the division inquiring about special education programming and the transfer process.

  • Work with parents to help them navigate discussions related to their child's needs.

  • Work with community agencies to identify resources for parents and families.

  • Collaborate with staff from the Office of Family and Community Engagement and represent the Office of Programs for Exceptional Children in division and community events.

  • Attend all Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) meetings and assist with any logistical needs.

  • Provide parent training related to the special education process.

  • Locate and train surrogate parents and assign as needed to IEP meetings.

  • Participate in ongoing professional learning related to current trends and best practices in supporting parents in the special education process.

  • Perform related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Must have knowledge and understanding of special education processes from referral through eligibility determination, as well as IEP development to address identified needs. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; maintain accurate and confidential records and demonstrate computer proficiency; establish and maintain effective relationships with school staff, parents, and community stakeholders; and demonstrate an ability to work as part of a collaborative team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required: Bachelor's degree in education, school counseling, social work, psychology, education or a related field. Experience and knowledge of special education processes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the phone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional standing, stooping, crouching, and driving. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Salary Range: From/To

Salary range: $50,515-$73,685

Salary will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. Entry-level salary will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the salary will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
