Overview

The Family Nurse Practitioner I collaborates with a multidisciplinary health team to deliver directcomprehensive care services and education to both well and/or ill patients. Under the direction of theSenior Nurse Practitioner, the incumbent practices nursing within the guidelines of the department, theInstitute and in accordance with the State of Maryland nurse practitioner regulations. This position isgranted specified professional staff privileges by the Kennedy Krieger Institute Medical Board that arereviewed annually.

Responsibilities

  1. Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessments of patients with real, potential, acute,and/or chronic health problems (which may include psychosocial, cognitive, and personal assetlimitations of the patient/family).2. Performs health screenings and orders, performs, and interpret tests. Establishes medical andnursing diagnosis, orders and evaluates diagnostic studies, performs and monitors therapeuticprocedures, and assesses and/or manages follow-up plans.3. Assesses chronic health problems and refers patients to attending or primary provider whenappropriate. Collaborates with other professionals to develop and implement a plan of care for thechild, adolescent, or adult with an emphasis on wellness.4. Prescribes and monitors medications, including dosage, side effects, and adjustments.5. Records and documents health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate, and/or expediterequired services.6. Assumes responsibility and accountability for time management, professional relationships,interpersonal interactions, and professional self-development. Remains current in clinical practiceby attending relevant continuing education.7. Provides health education to caregivers and members of the multidisciplinary team concerninghealth issues such as medication administration, illness management, and disease prevention.Teaches children, adolescents, and adults about good health practices.8. Treats acute and minor illness.9. Develops, conducts, and/or evaluates formal and informal in-service and continuing educationprograms in area(s) of expertise for peer group and other disciplines as appropriate for department.10. Participates in the research process and enhances the quality and clinical relevance of nursingresearch by promoting nursing knowledge in clinical services, providing knowledge about howclinical services should be delivered, and assisting others in applying scientific knowledge innursing practice.11. Participates in departmental, functional unit, and hospital committees as assigned.12. Serves as a clinical preceptor for nursing students, including nurse practitioner candidates asassigned.13. Advocates for patients with developmental disabilities within medical, community, and schoolarenas.14. Participates in developing and implementing quality assurance programs.

Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain Registered Nurse (RN) licensure and certification as a nurse practitionerrequired by the State of Maryland to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.• Board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner from an approved organization by the MarylandState Board of Nursing (such as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board orthe American Nurses Credentialing Center) required.

EDUCATION:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialty required.• Completion of a nurse practitioner program approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing.EXPERIENCE:

Minimum two (2) years of related clinical nursing experience required.
