Family Engagement Specialist

Directly Responsible To: Family Engagement Director.

Primary Responsibility: Provide support to our migrant program population by building intentional relationships with our families. This responsibility ranges from recruiting, keeping records and building connections with students and their families. The specialist will support the Family Engagement Director working on routine clerical duties, material preparation for family nights and other non-instructional duties. The specialist will also provide support to students qualifying for other special programs including but not limited to Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program, Title 1, and Special Education.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or GED and at least ONE of the following requirements:

  • 2-year post-secondary degree or more

  • 72 quarter credits at a post-secondary school

  • Bilingual required (English/Spanish)

Main Responsibilities for Family Engagement specialist:

  • Build connection with families and their students (PreK - 12) to proactively remove barriers and support student's success.

  • Communicate with other school staff regarding the identified needs of priority students and families have and inform them of the work to help students stay on track to graduate or promote to next grade level.

  • Use the Strengthening Families Five Protective Factors framework to provide services to students and families.

  • Conduct referrals to services aligned to student's need that are available through school district and/or community to reduce and/or eliminate identified barriers

  • Identify and recruit migrant families.

  • Maintain accurate records, files and data of the services provided

  • When needed, represent the Schools, Family and Community Engagement Coordinator at family nights.

  • Conduct parent information sessions to ensure that migrant students and their parents understand assessment and graduation requirements and students understand their rights to an equitable and rigorous education that prepares them for college and career.

  • Promote access to or develop leadership and mentoring programs to facilitate the needs of migrant students and their families.

  • Support the interpreter work if demand requested.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

Preferred Qualification

  • Knowledge and/or experience understanding migrant families' needs.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the job include: operate standard office equipment including using relevant software, prepare and maintain accurate records, effective oral and written communication skills (with students, parents and staff), leadership abilities, and organizational skills.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform calculations including fractions, percents, and ratios; read a variety of materials, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the job includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development and learning styles, and age appropriate activities. A second language may be required.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, collate data, use job related office equipment, and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals. Problem solving with data requires the ability to follow prescribed guidelines. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, setting priorities, and working as part of a team. Occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assisting in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget.

Continuing Education/Training

CPR Certificate and First Aid Certificate may be required
