The Food Innovation Center invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant/Senior Faculty Research Assistant I: Product Development position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.

The Food Innovation Center (FIC) Experiment Station is an off-campus unit of the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station and is located in downtown Portland. The FIC Experiment Station supports mission-oriented research in the areas of food product development, package and logistics engineering, consumer sensory science, and agricultural market economics. This position will be responsible for assisting the Product and Process Development Director with management of the Product and Process Development Program activities and general project management. The work will be conducted in the Product Development Laboratory complex that includes a commercial kitchen, a pilot processing facility, and an analytical support laboratory. Responsibilities will include conducting industrial client recruitment, project ideation sessions, concept prototype development, scale up processing support and product presentations at meetings of industry representatives. The incumbent will also work towards integrating the Product and Process Development Program into collaborative research projects with other FIC and OSU Programs. Additionally, they will aim to increase the international visibility of OSU and FIC and build relationships with international research institutions, organizations, or relevant industry partners outside of the US. Additional responsibilities may include assisting other FIC program areas with mission-oriented research and service testing activities as assigned by the FIC Experiment Station Director.

What You Will Need

Minimum Qualifications for All Ranks

  • B.S or higher in Culinary/ Food Science.

  • 2 years of experience working in a culinary, food or product development position.

  • Prior research experience

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information effectively orally and in writing.

  • Strong ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects.

  • Ability to identify and describe taste, and flavor for food & beverages.

  • Understanding and ability to operate basic kitchen and lab equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and show a willingness to promote teamwork.

  • Ability to manage time effectively with minimal supervision.

  • Computer skills- Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Additional Required Qualifications for the Senior Faculty Research Assistant I rank:

  • Four years of professional experience conducting research in food science, agriculture or related field.

  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publication and presentation in food science, agriculture or related field.

What We Would Like You to Have

8 or more years working experience as a product developer and demonstrated competency with product development activities (including project management).

4 or more years working experience as a chef or culinary specialist.

International project management experience.

Knowledge of FSMA and general kitchen and lab sanitation procedures.

Understanding and ability to operate precision cooking equipment (combi-oven, sous-vide, c-vap, etc.)

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Typical work schedule is expected to be a 40-hr Monday-Friday work week; however, flexibility in hours and days will be required to support project requirements and occasionally require weekend or evening work. Position may be required to travel to meetings and conferences. Employee in this position must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighting up to 50 pounds.
