The Music Education Faculty in Creative Approaches to Music Education position is a unique opportunity for an educator who wants to be part of this mission. We are looking for a mentor and guide who can help students discover their identities as educators as they develop the skills, artistry, and passion needed for a multi-faceted, entrepreneurial career in music education.

Longy is seeking applications for a faculty member who has the skills needed to help students develop their interests and curiosity, passion for teaching, and embark on a career. The candidate's own career should include diverse music-making experiences and projects. The ideal candidate will guide students through an exploration of various established pedagogical methodologies (Kodály, Orff, Dalcroze, Suzuki, and Music Learning Theory), developing basic skills in classroom guitar, percussion, recorder, and barred instruments. empowering them to develop comprehensive skills in teaching music across diverse grade levels and learning environments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Introduce students to established methodologies including as Kodály, Orff, Dalcroze, Suzuki, and Music Learning Theory (Gordon), encouraging critical analysis of their strengths and weaknesses in terms of cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and equity.

  • Guide pre-service music educators as they develop their philosophies and understanding of culturally sustaining practices.

  • Mentor students in developing lesson plans and repertoire that reflect their teaching philosophy and cater to the needs of diverse learners in line with the National Core Arts Standards

  • Advocate for the integration of adaptations, modifications, accommodations, and inclusivity into every lesson, ensuring accessibility for all learners.

  • Foster an understanding of routines, sequencing, pacing, assessment, and differentiation within the context of various pedagogical approaches.

  • Cultivate an inclusive and diverse song repertoire, emphasizing the importance of representation and cultural sensitivity in music education.

  • Promote the use of composition, critical listening, and improvisation to enrich students' musical experiences and foster creative expression.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in classroom guitar, percussion, recorder, and barred instruments, and guide students in integrating these tools into their curriculum units.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years music teaching experience in a K-12 public, private or community school or organization setting.

  • Ability to model and demonstrate culturally sustaining practices in the PreK-12 music classroom or performance ensemble setting.

  • Ability to teach adapt instructional goals within the course based on students of various musical abilities.

  • Willingness to work within a collaborative department.
