This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Faculty- Fire Protection Technology who will be all-in on our mission and who will teach courses in the assigned discipline. Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or online courses and in immediate preparation for respective courses such as maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught and preparing the teaching materials. With appropriate certifications, applicants may be required to teach/assist in other first responder disciplines (law enforcement; EMS). This position is currently located in Amarillo, Texas on the East Campus of Amarillo College and instruction may be required at select locations off-campus as well. This position will be located at the new First Responders Academy beginning Fall 2024.

Requirements

EDUCATION

Required:
*Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection Technology or related field.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years of experience at the officer level (Lieutenant or above) in a municipal, ESD or county fire department, in the training department.

*A combination of education, training, and experience may be considered in lieu of an associate degree.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES

Required:

  • Valid Texas Class B exempt driver’s license.
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Advanced Structure Fire Suppression certification or higher.
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Instructor III certification or ability to obtain this certification within six months of hire date.

Preferred:

  • Additional related certifications, Peace Officer and/or EMS.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Five (5) years of experience in firefighting at the officer level (Lieutenant or above) in a municipal, ESD or county fire department.

Preferred:

  • Experience with academic programs and/or continuing education at the college level.
  • Experience in other first responder disciplines (law enforcement; EMS).

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in faculty development programs each semester and dual credit partnerships.
  • Exhibit effective teaching in Fire Protection courses, including classroom instruction, directing projects, and assisting with student coursework, research and internships, and with a willingness to learn new software applications as needed.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of students’ growth and progress to prepare students.
  • Plan, develop and present organized classroom and online instruction and learning opportunities for students in accordance with approved course outlines and learning outcomes.
  • Develop curriculum and prepare syllabus, keeping course content consistent with the catalog description.
  • Perform teaching activities, including classroom/online instructions, directions projects, and assisting with student coursework, research and internships.
  • Teach subject matter field in person and online.
  • Select instructional materials, such as textbooks.

Faculty Salary: Amarillo College- Salary Schedules (actx.edu), salary is determined by the Faculty Placement Schedule and the Faculty Salary Questionnaire.

Teaching Load: The teaching load for full-time faculty will normally consist of 15 load hours or equivalent assignments. Faculty are assigned by their chair to teach in their major fields, insofar as possible. They may, however, be assigned to teach in their minor fields in accordance with standards of accrediting associations. (Responsibilities for Non-teaching faculty will be individually prescribed).

Proportional Assignments: Full-time faculty appointed for less than a 15-load-hour assignment per semester shall receive accrued benefits proportional to the percentage of appointment.

Overload Assignments: Overload teaching may also be assigned as needed by the department chair (as referenced in the "Overload Assignments" section of the "Faculty Handbook). Pay for overload teaching will be based on the Part-time Instructor Salary Schedule rates.

Office Hours: Full-time faculty members must have regular office hours for teaching preparation, student advising, and other incidental tasks required for teaching. The schedule of classroom and office hours must be posted as soon after registration as possible.

Advising Requirements: Faculty will serve as academic advisors based on a divisional or departmental advising plan. The number of advisees will vary depending on the number of majors in a division. Adjustments in other responsibilities or compensation may be made if it is necessary for a faculty member to be the advisor for more than sixty students.

Committee Assignments: Each faculty member will normally be assigned membership on at least one institutional committee but may not be required to serve on more than three committees.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices and buildings, and requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or maneuver office supplies as needed.

Working Conditions: Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events if necessary.)

Work Environment: This position operates in a professional office environment, routinely uses standard office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, copy and fax machines, filing cabinets) and is in a high traffic area with continual interruptions. Software commonly used includes Microsoft Office, Colleague, and various other educational applications. Work may also be performed outside of the office and with little to no supervision.
