DEFINITION:

Under the general direction of the Vice President of Instruction and within the Professional and Technical Studies Division, FRC seeks an instructor in the area of Environmental Studies (ENVR) to support the Ecosystem Restoration and Applied Fire Management Bachelor's Degree Program. The successful candidate will work with existing faculty and program staff to support an undergraduate curriculum to meet the needs of students seeking vocational certifications, associate's degrees, and bachelor's degrees. This position is grant-funded and subject to future grant funding.

Required Qualifications

  • Ecology: master's degree or higher in Ecology OR Environmental Studies OR the equivalent

  • OR

  • Forestry/Natural Resources: master's degree or higher in Forestry/Natural Resources (i.e. forestry, range management; soil, air and water resources; fish/wildlife management; parks and recreation) OR the equivalent.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic and socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Essential Duties

  • Teach courses related to fire ecology and management, forest ecology and management, wildland fire, restoration, environmental monitoring and measurements, including modeling and geospatial analysis, etc.

  • Create and implement culturally-responsive and equity-minded course material, teaching practices, and learning assessment strategies that enhance student success and persistence toward academic/career goals and that help close equity gaps.

  • Teach environmental data collection methods with emphasis on proper and accepted field protocols, data analysis, and data interpretation.

  • Mentor to students on academic pathways and career opportunities.

  • Prepare students to meet employment needs in the job market.

  • Assist in outreach, recruitment, and retention of students, including tracking of transfer and job placement of graduates.

  • Participate in faculty duties including, but not limited to: shared governance committees, completing student learning assessments, faculty self and peer evaluations, organizing and participating in student life events, as well as other college and community service activities.

  • Participate in program-specific duties including, but not limited to: curriculum development, review and articulation, managing program budgets, applying for and overseeing grants, planning and participating in marketing and outreach events.

  • Teach on-line, evening, and off-campus classes and conduct weekend field trips as needed and assigned.

  • Build and maintain relationships with local employers, public, and private agencies in related occupational fields

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in natural resources management, forest management, wildland and prescribed fire management, and/or ecosystem restoration.

  • Applied skills in forest, meadow, and stream measurements, including restoration.

  • Experience in environmental planning, review, and management.

  • Broad knowledge and demonstrated understanding of wildland fire and prescribed burning, including practical experience.

  • Advanced National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) certifications.

  • Experience collaborating with government land management and non-governmental conservation and management organizations.

  • Grant writing and management experience.

  • Teaching experience at the college level, preferably community college.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Willingness to incorporate a variety of teaching methods to accommodate unique student learning styles.
