Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) is UNC-Chapel Hill's pan-university faculty development center charged by the Provost to be the leader in faculty development initiatives supporting teaching and learning. The CFE provides programs that support and advance faculty through the various stages of their careers in their roles as teachers, researchers, leaders, and mentors, and connects them to resources across the University. The Center also facilitates University-wide responses to educational challenges and issues, and develops, evaluates, and encourages the best practices in faculty support, recruitment, retention, and assessment.

The CFE is growing under the auspices of a new Office of Faculty Affairs in the Office of the Provost. The CFE's strategic goals include initiatives to enhance the visibility of and commitment to faculty development and success across campus; expand access to faculty leadership development, integrating programs and offerings in mentoring as central to equitable faculty advancement and success; and continue its outstanding work to cultivate excellence in teaching and learning and instructional innovation.

The CFE strives to plan, implement, and continually assess our programs and services to ensure that our work is of the highest quality and relevant to support the professional development of all faculty. The CFE facilitates campus connections and networking, creates opportunities for internal and external collaboration, and highlights the expertise and success of faculty across their career stages and campus roles. The Center embraces a growth mindset through continuously learning, developing new skills, and challenging ourselves in our individual work and collective work. Priority areas of growth for our Teaching and Learning team include support for faculty in Generative AI, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and emerging pedagogies.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Faculty Development Consultant in Teaching and Learning will have primary responsibilities in the Teaching and Learning unit and will report to the Associate Director for Faculty Development in Teaching and Learning. The focus of the position is to help plan, develop, implement, lead, and assess programs and resources; strong foundational skills in areas like consultation and workshop development are essential. The Faculty Development Consultant will offer consultations and lead workshops, programs, and events in collaboration with other staff, faculty, and campus partners to strengthen and expand the Center's commitment to inclusive, equitable, engaging, and evidence-based teaching. This position contributes to the overall mission of the CFE by participating in meetings, retreats, and working groups to support the Director and center-wide initiatives; and representing the CFE in various campus committees and roles.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to consulting or developing course content, curriculum, instructional technique/technology, distance education design, development or implementation, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience teaching in one or more credit-bearing courses in a higher education setting

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with faculty, University leadership, staff, and students

  • Possess superior communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in faculty development in the higher education setting

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while managing multiple priorities

  • Proficiency with and flexibility in moving among a variety of digital platforms

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Three or more years teaching in one or more credit-bearing courses in a higher education setting

  • Two years of work experience in faculty or educational development. Experience in non-university settings will be considered depending on applicant's ability to apply their experience to faculty development in the higher education setting

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and/or faculty development in the form of publications, presentations, or teaching awards

  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively, productively, and empathetically as part of a team and for the good of a group of colleagues

  • Skills in design and leading/facilitating engaging presentations and discussions on pedagogical topics demonstrated effective consultative and/or coaching skills, including strong active listening skills, analytical competence, and knowledge of educational development resources

  • Experience facilitating collection and interpretation of multiple forms of feedback on teaching, including from students, peers, and classroom observations

  • Ability to apply pedagogy and learning theory to faculty development, with general and discipline-specific knowledge of teaching, learning, instructional technology, and evaluation in higher education

  • Demonstrated engagement with emerging technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, and the ability to create resources and trainings to support the adoption and integration of those technologies into the higher education context

  • Familiarity with and interest in a wide variety of existing or emerging pedagogical frameworks (e.g., trauma-informed pedagogy)

  • Interest and experience in supporting the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL)
