Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated. Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position.
Applicant should have CPR, AED, First Aid and/or Wilderness First Aid training.
Duties Description This position will function as the Caretaker of Lake Colden Outpost. The purpose of the Outpost Caretaker is to provide an administrative presence in the back country locations where remoteness and/or use levels have dictated that DEC presence is necessary for the protection of natural resources and public safety.
Outpost caretaker responsibilities include maintenance of the outpost, maintenance and upkeep of the surrounding working circle, such as trails, privies and lean-tos. The outpost caretaker would sometimes be the first responder to emergencies in the back country. The caretaker should be able to provide first aid and CPR if needed. The outpost caretaker would also provide public education and would assist the Forest Rangers with search on rescue details.
Additional Comments Will be required to stay in the outpost for extended periods of time. Winter schedule, if needed, would consist of 8 day work schedule switching with the other caretaker on Sundays. Will be required to navigate mountainous terrain in all types of weather.
Will be required to respond to emergencies at all hours of day and night. Will be required to navigate trails on snowshoes and back country skis.
Will be required to use an axe, bowsaw and chainsaw. Will be required to interact with the public in an positive and professional manner.
Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds.
This is a temporary position with a duration of 5/1/19 through 3/31/20. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to dates listed above. Actual work schedule and duties may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
