The Department of Comparative Medicine in the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Facility Manage / Staff Associate.

The Facility Manager will report directly to the Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine and is an internal, quality assurance manager working to identify quality issues within the animal facility program and address them through changes to standard operating procedures and training. The position requires strong communication and analysis skills.

The Facility Manager key responsibilities are: conducting the session, a copy of the documents/an outline of the training provided or reviewed during the session, the results of any assessments provided. These records will be used to demonstrate compliance for various oversight bodies. Additional duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Create an annual continuing education program agenda for Laboratory Animal Caretakers and Veterinary Care Staff based on the topic domains for The American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification exams.

  • Present a monthly staff training (or coordinate the presentation from an outside expert). Training's may be novel subjects and/or may focus on corrective actions associated with deficiencies discovered in meeting the standard operating procedures.

  • Develop and administer assessments (written, oral, or demonstrative) to measure effectiveness of training efforts.

  • Maintain records of trainings provided that will include at a minimum: a list of attendees at each session, the name and credentials of the person conducting the session, a copy of the documents/an outline of the training provided or reviewed during the session, the results of any assessments provided. These records will be used to demonstrate compliance for various oversight bodies and should be kept in accordance with SUNY Downstate's record retention policy.

  • Serve as back-up for Vet Tech who handles Researcher Training.

  • Provide Facility Training for new animal facility staff.

  • Act as an ambassador to build a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Supports the identification and evaluation of the animal facility's risk areas to identify process improvement opportunities. Once identified, creates a proposal for improvement to the Director for approval.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of facility operational policies and standard operating procedures and the triennial revision of the program description for AAALAC accreditation.

  • Assist the husbandry supervisor in coordination of quality assurance as it relates to equipment and supplies.

  • Provide the DCM Director with regular weekly rounds reports on environmental conditions in the facility and FM& D response and plans for remediation.

  • Work closely with DCM Financial Administrator to order capital and non-capital equipment and supplies, renew relevant service contracts and input for annual budget.

  • Work with management, FM&D shops (electrical, paint, carpentry, sheet metal) and contracted outside agencies to maintain full accreditation with AAALAC, USDA compliance and NYS DOH regulatory agencies.

  • Work with Director, lead veterinary technician to coordinate export, import and quarantine of animals from non-commercial vendors

  • Takes the lead to make the necessary changes in approved process improvement projects working with other DCM staff as necessary. Monitors and communicates the results of process improvement projects/ initiatives to the Director and/or DCM Leadership Team.

  • Lead implementation of corrective action plans designed by various oversight bodies (USDA, DOH, AAALAC, etc.). Including implementation of effectiveness measures to compare before and after the corrective plan.

  • Attend at least one national meeting/training a year in order to get ideas for training and learn new material to pass on to staff. Attend local meetings to make connections with potential invited trainers and to learn about new developments in the field.

  • Serve on the internal SOP Committee to assist in the writing, revising and editing of SOPs.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience as a veterinary technician, facility research animal facility manager, husbandry supervisor, and/or a research animal colony manager; or other hands on role in an animal research facility is essential.
