The Building Maintenance and Grounds Department reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management and is responsible for the planning, repair, renovation and maintenance of all NCCU facilities.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to perform building trades including but not limited to Cabinetmaking, Carpentry, Locksmithing, Masonry, Painting, Plastering, and Roofing and various other repairs in order to perform a variety of tasks ranging from routine and unskilled to highly skilled in order to complete building renovations involving a range of facilities maintenance and technical services.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge:
Knowledge of standard practices and methods of the carpentry, roofing, painting, electrical, and plumbing trades
Knowledge of tools and materials used in repairing and constructing wooden articles
Knowledge of elementary, arithmetic and units of measure as well as the ability to make accurate arithmetical calculations
Knowledge of the safety precautions of the plumbing trade
Knowledge of using carpenters' hand tools and woodworking machines
Ability to read and work from blueprints, drawings, or sketches
Ability mixing paints and in matching and blending colors
Ability to use and care of tools and equipment used in the painting, electrical, and plumbing trades
Ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment
Ability to perform tasks which require walking, standing, bending, stooping, and working in awkward positions
Ability to lift moderately heavy objects while cutting, bending, securing, wrapping, or finishing the surface of pipes, vents, ducts, dry wall, and other materials
Ability to work outside when needed
Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;
Ability to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion
Interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions
Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving
Ability to plan, prioritize and organize workflow
Ability to work flexible schedules
Excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
