About the Job

  • Your Role

The primary function of this position is to assist the General Service Manager in the management of the maintenance program at the Santiam Correctional Institution. Provide coordination, supervision, instruction, and assignment of work to adult in custody (AIC) workers. Direct/supervise crews to ensure job related rules, policies, procedures, and security guidelines are enforced, discipline and order is maintained and instructs and trains work techniques and procedures in a safe efficient manner building for equipment maintenance and repair. Evaluate AIC work performance and conducts AIC searches to ensure absence of contraband. Direct, instruct, and coordinate skilled AIC work crews who perform a wide variety of trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, drywall, roofing, concrete, painting, sheet metal, etc. Coordinates the routine installation, repair, maintenance, and upgrade of facility systems. Evaluate and monitor work in progress and at the time of completion, for conformance to blueprints, schematics and construction, fire and safety codes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of: a) general building maintenance; b) carpentry; c) electrical; d) mechanical; e) painting; or f) plastering experience.
  • A journeyman's license/card in any of the above trades will substitute for this experience. Be sure a copy of your journeyman's license/card is attached to your application form.

NOTE: At the time of recruitment, agencies will specify if the position requires a specialty in a) through f) above. Some positions in this class may require the possession of a valid Oregon driver's license valid for the class of vehicles used by the employing agencies. Agencies will note this requirement at the time of recruitment. Positions assigned Electrical duties require a Limited Maintenance Electrical license. Requested Skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others;

  • Experience in building construction, remodeling, repair, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, drywall, roofing, concrete, painting, sheet metal, etc.;

  • Ability to work with Adults in Custody;

  • Evaluate work performance, interview, hiring, and terminating;

  • Interpret and apply statutes, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Preferred Skills

  • Maintenance experience with the limited maintenance electrical.

Working Conditions

This position is located inside the Santiam Correctional Institution and works in close contact with adults in custody in the institution setting and may be exposed to hostile situations or incidents. Inherent custodial duties include the responsibility for personally handling AIC incidents in the employee's immediate work area. The employee is responsible to prevent escapes from confinement by proper control of keys, tools, and contraband and documenting unusual incidents as they occur. The employee is subject to call back in the event of an emergency at which time he/she would be placed in any post in the institution.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.

Requirements for Employment

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, there may be some felony convictions that could disqualify you for this position. However, having a felony record does not exclusively restrict you from being considered as an applicant. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.
