CLASS DESCRIPTION

Baltimore City Department of Recreation & Parks is seeking to hire a part-time Seasonal Maintenance Aide (Facility Maintenance & Repair Handyperson).

Repair person will serve the Department of Recreation & Parks supporting the facility maintenance at Cylburn Arboretum and the Rawlings Conservatory under the guidance of the Chief and Assistant Chief Horticulturist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Performing minor fixes such as repairing broken locks, flooring, paper towel holder, tiles

• Checking control panels and electrical wiring to identify issues.

• Perform preventive maintenance and light building repairs.

• Paint and fill gaps or crevices (on walls, sidewalks, handrails, etc.)

• Undertake light installation or carpentering (e.g. repair cabinets)

• Repair or identify issues with equipment or appliances.

• Assist tradespeople with electrical, plumbing or HVAC repairs.

• Undertake duties as assigned or emergency tasks (e.g. shoveling snow)

• Identify and report the need for major repairs.

• Conduct maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs.

• Inspect and troubleshoot equipment and systems (e.g. ventilation)

• Check functionality of safety systems (e.g. fire alarm).

• Report to a facilities or maintenance manager for issues.

• Order tools, materials, and supplies for maintenance tasks.

• Submit Service Requests for larger or complex repairs.

• Track status of repairs and follow up.

• Monitor various systems (check oil readings, reset boilers).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: Have graduated from high school or equivalent.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Proven experience as handyman/repair person/maintenance worker and experience with hardware tools and power equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems

• Basic math skills

• Well-organized and apt in problem-solving

• Attention to detail.

• Ability to read technical manuals and drawings.

• Very good communication and interpersonal skills
