ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Harbor division of the Public Works Department will be hiring a Regular Part-Time (30hrs/week) Facility Attendant to perform various duties to operate the Wharf Resource Recovery Facility under the general supervision of the Harbormaster. We are seeking task-oriented individuals to reliably carry out these duties who will be good ambassadors of the City of Monterey to members of the public and waterfront tenants.

The Harbor Facility Attendant will work 30 hours per week with a split shift schedule. A sample of a potential schedule would be to work Sunday through Tuesday from 8am-noon and 4pm-8pm with an additional 6 hours of work on Wednesday from 8am-2pm. It is key to note that most work days will have a four hour break period that breaks up the day which is necessitated by the need to have morning and evening pickup rounds at Old Fisherman's Wharf.

The list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future Facility Attendant vacancies which occur during the life of the list.

Application Process

A limited number of applicants who clearly show that they most closely meet the needs of this position in terms of training, experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will be accepted to participate in the selection process. This process will include evaluation and initial screening of the standard on-line City application to determine which candidates progress to the next phase of the recruitment process. The subsequent selection process may include a written test/written exercise, performance exercise, panel interview, and a final departmental interview. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate may be required to successfully pass a physical exam including a drug screen, a Livescan fingerprint background check, and a reference check. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to make changes to components of the examination process.

Candidates who successfully complete all phases of this recruitment process will be placed on an eligibility list. The eligibility list is active for 12-months and may be used to fill additional positions including lower-level positions determined to have similar duties and requirements.

SUMMARY: Under supervision, to perform a variety of work in the operation and custodial maintenance of the Conference Center, Sports Center, Library, Recreation Centers, or Harbor facilities and equipment, including group and event servicing and setup duties; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:This is a journey level class in the Facility Attendant series that performs the full range of duties required to ensure that the any City building or facility maintains a high level of cleanliness and readiness for public use. This class differs from the custodial positions in that the Facility Attendant performs general maintenance and is generally assigned to a specific building or facility to maintain.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform service tasks for conferences, programs and events in progress or upcoming;

  • Respond to requests from facility users, members of the public and staff;

  • Perform and/or assist with building security functions;

  • Arrange furniture and gym equipment for events;

  • Set up and/or assists with stage lights, public address and sound systems, exhibits, booths and electrical outlet systems for conferences and shows;

  • Assist in the renovation, repair, painting and maintenance of facilities and equipment, including bleachers, exercise equipment, furniture and props; setting clocks; removing pool covers;

  • Perform and/or assist in replacing washers in faucets, repairing electrical plugs and cords, and related work;

  • Perform cleaning and custodial duties such as sweeping, scrubbing vacuuming, mopping, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors, operating power cleaning and buffing equipment, dusting, washing windows, walls and cleaning woodwork, emptying waste baskets and waste receptacles and related duties;

  • Operate power cleaning and buffing equipment; dust;

  • Clean restroom facilities and replenish supplies;

  • Coordinate custodial work performed by contract personnel, ensuring that work is completed in a timely manner;

  • Maintain simple records, such as logs and timecards;

  • Operate automotive equipment, such as a van, forklift and hydraulic power lift;

  • Operate trash and recycling compactors;

  • Operate electric dumpster mover;

  • May guide the work of unskilled part-time employees;

  • May be utilized in any City building as a Custodian when necessary;

  • Work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays;

  • Support the relationship between the City of Monterey and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff;

  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information;

  • Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION:

Education: Graduation fromhigh school or GED equivalent.

Experience:One (1) year of experience involving public contact. Experience in custodial, meeting room set ups and or facility maintenance environments is desirable.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License upon time of appointment and be insurable with the City's standard insurance rate, unless otherwise approved by appointing authority.

Environmental Elements

Employees work in an assigned facility with moderate noise levels and controlled temperature conditions. Employees will work with and around hazardous chemicals, moving vehicles and machinery and heavy equipment. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All City of Monterey employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
