About Us

Georgia Tech's Infrastructure and Sustainability Department is currently recruiting for Facilities Specialist Apprentices. Facilities Specialists serve on the front lines of facilities operations in many types of buildings. As occupant expectations become more sophisticated and building systems more complex, Facilities Specialists play a significant role that can lead to multiple career opportunities in the Facilities Services Industry.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position at Georgia Tech and a seat in an apprenticeship program accredited by the US Department of Labor. It is designed to be a two-year program and incorporates competency-based wage increases.

Apprentices will obtain hands-on training and have 24/7 access to required coursework. While the on-the-job-learning is paid, the related technical instruction (coursework) is unpaid. Apprentices should expect the coursework to take 2-3 hours per week to complete. If offered the position, Apprentices must apply to and maintain enrollment in the Apprenticeship Program.

Job Summary

This position will work under the guidance and mentorship of experienced maintenance technicians to learn and perform a wide range of maintenance tasks. The primary responsibilities will involve assisting in the upkeep and repair of our facilities and equipment. This position requires acceptance into and

maintaining an active enrollment in the Facilities Specialist Apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -

Obtain and maintain registration with the Facilities Specialist Apprenticeship Program by successfully meeting or exceeding the goals, objectives, and competencies of the On The Job Learning (OJL) and Related Technical Instruction (RTI) as outlined in the Facilities Specialist Apprenticeship Program

Job Duty 2 -

Assist maintenance technicians in performing routine inspections and preventive maintenance on various systems, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical equipment

Job Duty 3 -

Participate in troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment malfunctions or failures and assist in implementing appropriate repairs

Job Duty 4 -

Learn to and conduct regular maintenance tasks, such as lubricating machinery, replacing filters, and cleaning mechanical components

Job Duty 5 -

Support the team in conducting general repairs on building structures and facilities, including painting, carpentry work, and basic repairs. Collaborate with other team members to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of maintenance tasks.

Job Duty 6 -

Assist in maintaining maintenance logs, documenting completed tasks, and recording equipment service histories

Job Duty 7 -

Participate in safety inspections and adhere to established safety protocols to ensure a safe work environment. Develop a working knowledge of maintenance tools and equipment, ensuring their proper use and maintenance.

Job Duty 8 -

Attend training sessions and educational programs to enhance technical knowledge and skills

Job Duty 9 -

Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

High School Diploma/GED or Vocational School Diploma

Other Required Qualifications

Must be accepted into and maintain registration with the Facilities Specialist Apprenticeship Program which is registered with the US Department of Labor

Possess a Driver's License

The Maintenance Tech Apprentice role involves physically demanding tasks that require the ability to:

Lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects, equipment, and materials, up to 50 pounds, on a regular basis.

Stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods during maintenance activities.

Work in confined spaces and at heights, using appropriate safety equipment.

Use manual tools and power tools effectively and safely.

Climb ladders and scaffolding to access equipment and work areas.

Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including safety goggles, gloves, and steel-toed boots.

Demonstrate physical dexterity and coordination for handling intricate maintenance tasks.

Ability to work in hot and cold environments.

Ability to drive a vehicle

o Must be able to handle heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more

o Strong desire to learn and grow professionally. Willingness to learn and a positive attitude toward

the challenges of the apprenticeship program

o Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems is advantageous

o Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

o Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions closely

o Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team

o Eagerness to take on new challenges and tackle complex problems

o Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced and evolving environment with working rotating

shifts as necessary along with nights and weekends

o Basic computer literacy and proficiency in using standard office software

o Willingness to follow instructions and adhere to safety guidelines

o Punctuality and reliability in meeting work schedules and deadlines
