Nature of Work

This limited-term position is sponsored by grant funds, where selected individuals will be provided mentorship, guidance, and training to gain skills related to facility maintenance. Responsibilities include assisting maintenance staff with a wide variety of general and preventative maintenance, and performing custodial work to ensure City of Rochester facilities are properly maintained, clean and safe.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This position is funded through a grant provided by the Federal Department of Labor, with the purpose of having more women of color gain skills and experience to obtain a career in the renewable energy/built environment field. The City will have various cohorts, each term lasting 6 months.

The 2024 rate of pay is $23.98 per hour.

The work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment and/or location.

  • Learn how to perform general and preventative maintenance on building and specialized systems and equipment; then implement learned skills to assist City staff with maintenance responsibilities.

  • Train with the Maintenance Trainer to learn various areas of maintenance and facility operation, such as preventative maintenance, operation of building automation systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, etc.

  • Learn and follow all procedures and safety standards.

  • Assist with performing and documenting required monthly preventive maintenance on equipment.

  • Support staff with assessing the condition of equipment and parts and repair as required.

  • Learn and perform procedures to complete daily system checks on Building Automation System, water treatment, heating and cooling systems.

  • Learn to read construction documents and specifications.

  • Process orders in a work order system.

  • Inventory tracking procedures.

  • Assist with the cleanliness and upkeep of City facilities

  • Assist with maintaining sidewalks by sweeping, shoveling, plowing and removing snow.

  • If needed assist with cleaning responsibilities such as cleaning glass, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, shoveling, and replenishing supplies. Remove rubbish, wastepaper, and recyclables as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.

 * ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSSpecial Requirement

This apprenticeship program will prioritize developing skills in the building maintenance field for women of color.

Education and Experience 

18 years of age

High School diploma or equivalent; and interest to learn more about maintenance.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver's license.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: computer operations, such as Microsoft Office Suite; and basic custodian and maintenance supplies and equipment.

Ability to: have a desire to learn; communicate effectively; work pleasantly, tactfully, and effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the public; understand and effectively carry out oral or written assignments and instructions; and follow safety standards.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA

In consideration of the overall amount of physical effort required to perform this position, the work is best described as Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Physical demands that may be required continuously (2/3 or more of the time), frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) are noted below:

Continuous demands: standing, walking, handling

Frequent demands: lifting, pushing/pulling, carrying

Occasional demands: sitting; reaching; kneeling, crouching, bending, climbing

Sensory requirements necessary in the performance of the essential functions of this position include: sight, hearing, touch

Environmental conditions that may exist in the performance of the essential functions of this job include:

Noise (need to shout in order to be heard)

Vibration (exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities of whole body)

Exposure to dust/gas/fumes/steam/chemicals

Work outdoors (no effective protection from weather)

Work at heights (such as on scaffolding or ladders)

Working around moving machinery (fork-lifts, tractors, mowers)

Protective equipment required (respirator, mask, earplugs, gloves, eyewear, etc.)
