Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and Associate Principal of Operations at Round Lake High School, the primary focus of the Facilities Groundskeeper Floater will be the aesthetics and maintenance of all grounds-related property, sports fields, and stadium associated with the Round Lake High School, to assure a safe, clean and attractive environment for students, staff, and the public. During the winter season, he/she will be responsible for snow/salt removal, custodial cleaning, and maintenance district wide.

Minimum Salary: Starting at $22.21 per hour for 2023-2024

12 Month position

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • 2 years groundskeeping, snow plowing or related experienced preferred.

  • Possess a current Illinois or Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License.

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses or permits.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of landscaping methods and equipment involved in grounds keeping.

  • Interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to learn and follow policies and procedures.

  • Skill and ability to safely use hand tools and operate vehicles and equipment used in grounds maintenance.

  • Ability to work with and direct individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Skill and ability to mow, edge, leaf-blow, prune, and maintain landscaped areas.

  • Skill and ability to safety and effectively operate all snow removal equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the assignment and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.

  • Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, fields, and other turf grounds; edge walkways; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; sweep debris from walkways, aprons, and other assigned areas.

  • Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize, and irrigate flowers, trees, grass, hedges, and shrubs; transport and install mulch; water various grounds areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system as required.

  • Perform a variety of grounds maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and surrounding landscape; measure and mark with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restricting lines as prescribed and established by league and sport rules; drag, repair, mow and edge baseball/softball infields, soccer fields; groom turf of stadium field using appropriate equipment and materials, prep and clean track, track and field pits; perform custodial responsibilities associated with press box, concession stands, booths, bathrooms, and gates.

  • Operate a variety of equipment such as mowers, edger, leaf-blower, sprayers, skid-steer loader, gator, Kromer groomer, golf carts, tractors, trucks, trailers, trimmers, shears, grinders, line-marking machines, snow-throwers, etc. as needed.

  • Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up and removing paper, trash, trimmings, and debris from grounds areas, parking lots, athletic fields, concrete aprons, and other assigned areas, empty waste receptacles.

  • Assist with other grounds maintenance and repair activities including tree removal, fence repair, general concrete, and asphalt repairs.

  • Assist plumbing contractor with winterizing/irrigation bathroom and concession plumbing lines prior to freezing temperatures and open irrigation bathroom and concession plumbing lines at appropriate times.

  • Maintain tennis courts and all stadium assets and structures, reporting needed repairs or unsafe conditions.

  • Must work as a snow removal team member to operate all snow plowing, salting, and snow removal equipment.

  • Load, unload, haul, and transport supplies, debris, materials, and equipment as required.

  • Provide support for the custodial team by conducting custodial duties, when directed.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Individuals appointed to these assignments must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the assignment. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to significant dust, heat, notice, extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment.
