About the Opportunity

The Facilities Engineer provides support to the Facilities Management Maintenance unit by identifying and implementing methods of improvement with the goal of refining day-to-day operations while also maximizing overall efficiency. More specifically, the Facilities Engineer leads a team of individuals that track and prioritize infrastructure requirements. The Facilities Engineer facilitates infrastructure assessments that help better inform and prioritize capital infrastructure investments, monitors and manages our energy use and provides engineering expertise to our facility maintenance shops.

The Facilities Engineer functions independently while collaborating with owners, architects, engineers, and contractors to resolve problems and manage projects from conception to completion. The primary responsibility of the Facilities Engineer is to ensure that our facilities are safe and functional for our students, faculty, and staff. In having a direct line of contact with departmental leadership, the Facilities Engineer can provide on the spot recommendations and guidance that allows for continual improvements to be made.

What You'll Do:

Problem Solving

  • Provide technical expertise in a wide range of facilities systems and structures, provide troubleshooting on complex system issues, and design corrective measures.

  • Analyze mechanical and electrical systems including heating, air conditioning, ventilation, heat transfer, refrigeration, electrical circuitry, medium voltage electrical distribution, and building automation.

  • Provide technical consulting services to Maintenance, Operations, and project groups on a wide range of facility systems and structures, including specification development and staff training.

  • Develop, write, and recommend policies and procedures governing the maintenance and operations of mechanical and electrical equipment including recommendations for equipment upgrades, adjustments, and replacements.

  • Provide design review service for new construction as well as renovation and alteration work.

  • Develop methods of repair for complex situations or failures, including root cause failure analysis, and resolution to chronic failures.

  • Prepare detailed condition assessment of facilities and infrastructure, including replacement versus repair cost analysis for both long- and short-term strategies.

  • Map building and infrastructure systems including the development of diagnostic procedures.

  • Conduct facility audits, including physical testing of HVAC and electrical systems, data gathering, and system analysis, to achieve optimal facility operation.

  • Prepare justifications, deferred maintenance recommendations, complex reports and detailed presentations regarding facilities improvement based on comprehensive research and analysis of trends, life cycle cost, efficiency, and energy use.

  • Develop strategies for measuring the effectiveness and performance of preventative maintenance initiatives.

  • Perform energy conservation analysis and make recommendations regarding energy consumption considering the related mission of sustainability.

  • Manage contracts relating to vendors performing services on campus.

Project Management

  • Oversee project production efforts to assure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.

  • Participate with University clients and associates in establishing clear and achievable overall project objectives, in preparing a project programming document, and in obtaining project authorization.

  • Work with University associates and department managers, external consultants, regulatory agencies, and contractors to establish and achieve the project schedule, cost, and performance (quality) objectives of each work package.

  • Assist with obtaining permits related to construction projects.

  • Assist with overall project documentation and reporting including electronic documentation management systems and project management software in accordance with departmental procedures.

  • Direct and coordinate manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, applicable codes, and project requirements.

  • Initiate, organize, and facilitate expedient communications to resolve conflicts, solve problems, review progress, maintain commitments, obtain approval, share information, motivate performances, and to effectively integrate all projects elements.

  • Inspect completed installations and observe operations to ensure conformance to design, equipment specifications, applicable codes, and project requirements.

  • Assist with project close‐out process including review of punch‐lists, and creation of Operation and Maintenance Manuals.

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • A minimum of three (3) years Facilities Engineering experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of facilities systems and how they work.

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, AutoCAD, PowerPoint, and Access)

  • Able to perform under pressure.

  • Willing to continue learning and develop skill as technology changes.

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to create drawings and develop comprehensive plans.

  • Ability to perform with minimal supervision, / self-motivated.

  • Ability to research and determine appropriate resources.

  • Ability to read complex mechanical / electrical drawings.

  • Understanding of mechanical and electrical systems including: heating, air conditioning, ventilation, heat transfer, refrigeration, electrical circuity, electrical transmission, and building automation.

  • Ability to breakdown complex systems into simple terms easily understood by others.
