DESCRIPTION

Consistently ranked among the top graduate theatre training programs in the country, UC San Diego's Department of Theatre & Dance offers undergraduate degrees, MFA degrees in Acting, Dance, Directing, Design (Costume, Lighting, Scenic, Sound), Stage Management, and Playwriting, and a PhD in Theatre and Drama. The Theatre & Dance department also shares a close relationship with the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse, where MFA candidates are provided professional residencies.

Applies campus policies and procedures to resolve a variety of facilities management issues. Works on facilities management problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Serves as Facilities Coordinator for all of the Theatre and Dance Department spaces. Responsibilities include but not limited to: coordinates the use and maintenance of instructional and research classrooms, labs, dance studios, theatres, and production shops and offices. Organizes, designs and supervises the construction of custom equipment or furnishings and space remodeling projects to meet the changing needs of the Department. Analyzes departmental space needs and allocations. Maintains Department equipment and furniture acquisitions and inventory. Serves as the Department EH&S Safety Coordinator, implementing State and Federal OSHA standards. Serves as liaison between other departments and groups on-and-off campus as related to the use of Theatre and Dance space and equipment. Serves as the main point of contact and coordinator for various small scale department events.

The Theatre and Dance department maintains approximately 90,000 square feet of space in Galbraith Hall and the theatre district along with various other campus buildings. This includes instructional and research classrooms, rehearsal halls, dance studios, performance venues, shops (wood, metal, machinery and framing), working plazas and decks, faculty and graduate student studios, and faculty, graduate student and administrative offices.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of practices and procedures relating to facility maintenance.

  • Proven knowledge of all aspects of building construction to include environmental control systems, digital HVAC control systems, electrical wiring, plumbing, digital card and palm reader security systems and closed circuit television monitors/systems. Ability to read and interpret construction and mechanical blueprints, schematics, and specifications.

  • Knowledge of monitoring techniques used for environmental health and safety maintenance.

  • Working knowledge of practices and procedures of safety and emergency preparedness.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents, specifications, drawings and related technical data. Requires thorough up-to-date working knowledge of building construction methods, practices, technology, materials in all types of construction.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturers and suppliers of educational aids, equipment and materials and proven skills in locating and evaluating materials and equipment relating to art production.

  • Proven skills to operate milling machines, lathes, grinders, drill presses, welding machines, table saws, planers, wood lathe and a wide assortment of had power tools with proficiency.

  • Demonstrated ability to convey hands on training to entry level students of machinery, carpentry and welding. Knowledge of personal protective equipment and of specific toxicity of artists materials.

  • Written communication skills to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, and training documents.

  • Skills to work under pressure of deadlines in a stressful environment.

  • Active listening, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills to effectively resolve questions, concerns, issues or problems and ensure cooperative and productive working relationships.

  • Skills to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Working organizational skills to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines, to establish goals and work load priorities, and to meet project deadlines within budget and time constraints.

  • Strong skills in communicating effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, including students, faculty, engineers, architects, administrators and laborers and in dealing with agitated individuals and to mediate conflicts.

  • Work independently with minimal guidance. Ability to make independent decisions that affect areas of responsibility.

  • Demonstrated management skills to include work delegation, employee performance evaluation, job description authoring, hiring and termination decisions.

  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of artistic endeavors and the materials (steel, wood, plastic, fiberglass, aluminum, etc.) and the various techniques of fabrication while maintaining environmental requirements and vocational health and safety codes and restrictions for safe art making.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills related to presentation of arguments, justifications, statistical data, etc.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of design and engineering and industrial shop layouts and organizations of machines, tools and equipment.

  • Proven skills in design, construction, cost estimate of specialized laboratory equipment and furniture and renovations.

  • Skills in evaluating usefulness and serviceability and lifetime usage of equipment
