Position Summary

Perform skilled labor in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) specialty for the maintenance, repair, and alteration activities of University facilities. Maintain automated building management system and energy management controls for University facilities.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform HVAC technical duties daily, including assigned work orders for the preventive maintenance program.

• Complete work orders issued to HVAC technician according to appropriate regulatory and code requirements expeditiously and to the highest quality.

• Observe the prioritization of work orders as assigned by the Manager.

• Inspect campus areas from the HVAC perspective to identify repairs and preventive tasks.

• Recommend capital equipment and system repairs/replacements based on life cycle analysis, energy conservation, and/or operating savings. Research all costs and impacts.

• Effectively participate in the planning, scheduling, coordination, and completion of in-house capital projects as requested.

• Estimate and initiate requisitions for materials as required.

• Participate in the procurement of contract HVAC services as required.

• Train subordinates or helpers as directed.

• Safeguard University supplied tools, materials, and equipment from theft and misuse.

• Cooperatively coordinate work with other divisional areas or trades for efficient and timely results.

• Responsible for responding to after-hours emergency calls for Facilities Services.

• Maintain operation of Automated Building Management System and Energy Management Controls for campus facilities.

• Assist technicians in other specialties as needed, ensuring life safety and licensing regulations are not compromised.

• Responsible for continued professional development in the areas of safety and advancing technology in the HVAC trade.

• Perform all other tasks as assigned by Management.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Other Attributes

• High School diploma required.

• Current State of Connecticut Journeyman's license in HVAC, refrigeration, or related trade fields; Minimum of a S-2 license required.

• Journeyman's level training and experience in HVAC.

• Three or more years of Journeyman's level experience in a commercial setting.

• Ability to renew professional license per regulations and maintain current certifications required.

• A current driver's license with no violations is required.

• Good general working knowledge of all trades.

• Proficient computer skills are required; operating knowledge and troubleshooting of equipment via Building Management System is a plus.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and professionally with others.

Unusual Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, heat, cold, potentially hazardous chemical compounds, mechanical and electrical conditions, as well as working at heights and in cramped areas. Frequent use of power tools and machinery; able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.

Possible flexible hours, as needed; assist with snow removal as required.
