Summary
The Maintenance Services Department is seeking an experienced Senior Supervisor to lead the Central Fabrication Shops. The Fabrication Group includes glass, wood, metal and sign and spray finishing crafts. Along with Tradespersons, the position will supervise the efforts of a Shop Planner and Work Coordinator. The ideal candidate will be comfortable receiving a wide variety of fabrication work requests, engaging with customers, and developing complex work plans to drawing, specification or applicable code. The candidate should be comfortable engaging customers, managers, engineers, and design professionals. Responsibilities*
Oversee Fabrication Group operations to include:
Safe operation of industrial cutting, bending, forming, joining, engraving and coating equipment.
Processing and triage of work requests to include:
Customer coordination to include site visits, work plans and periodic updates
Assign crafts and duration
Material ordering and kitting processes
Contracted support and associated procurement processes
Supervision of work during execution
Expediting completed work
Manage Daily assignments for Tradesperson and monitor support requirements
Review, approve and execute planned work packages
Review, approve and monitor weekly schedules and overtime requirements
Planning for and providing labor support to Region Maintenance teams and Construction Services
Submit purchase requests for approval to Material Services or UMICH Procurement Office
Identify sources and make purchase requests through University CMMS or procurement processes
Utilize strategic contracts for materials and labor services when available
Coordinate reception and tracking of purchased materials with Material Services Kitters
Support Fabrication Group Administrative requirements.
Represent the Fabrication shops in recurring meetings and disseminate information
Ensure accurate timekeeping
Maintain after-hours and on-call support as required
Document performance and provide open and formal performance feedback
Support grievance, work accommodation and other administrative resolution processes
Steward Central Shop resources and budgets
Designate and train Tool and Material Custodians
Manage a Tool Storage and Control Program supporting all Central Shops
Manage Fabrication Group consumables and re-charging
Develop shop level budgets
Program for high-value equipment and tool replacements.
Manage shop vehicle inventory based on utilization rates and assure they are regularly cleaned and serviced by assigned Drivers
Oversee craft training and certification
Ensure Tradespersons are trained and capable for work they are tasked to perform
Maintain and coordinate training plans required by job duties or specific job requirements
Maintain required certifications within Shops to perform critical work
Support craft apprenticeship and training programs
Maintain a safety first workplace culture
Comply with all MIOSHA/OSHA safety regulations
Provide time for daily housekeeping to maintain clean and orderly work areas
Make daily rounds and site visits to ensure safe working conditions and adherence to job safety plans
Ensure proper stowage of tools and materials and general upkeep of assigned spaces and vehicles
Ensure fully compliant hazardous material storage
Support Continuous Process Improvement
Encourage stewardship of University resources by determining best-value, sustainable solutions, including use of commercial off-the-shelf options
Attend and support efforts to continually adapt and improve methods, means and approach to providing Maintenance Services to the UMICH community
Maintain performance metrics to provide a foundation for decision-making
Review and respond in a proactive and constructive manner to customer feedback
Respond to emergent after-hours work
Other duties as assigned by management
Required Qualifications*
Prior Supervisory experience with skilled trades labor, preferably in a unionized work environment.
Minimum of five years experience working in a facilities maintenance, industrial fabrication and/or construction environment.
Experience developing project scope and field verification, coordinating engineering and design, and working to drawings and specifications.
Ability to interpret applicable MIOSHA regulations, perform job hazard analysis and communicate proper safety mitigations with written plans.
Ability to interpret architectural drawings, specifications and design guidelines, make material selections and performing material and equipment take-offs.
Ability to coordinate multiple planning tasks in a fast-paced production environment.
Understanding of quality control and quality assurance planning and oversight techniques.
Ability to use and/or learn a variety of computer programs including and/or equivalent to Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office (especially Excel), reporting, procurement and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Prior positions that demonstrate ability to communicate with a diverse group of people.
Accurate and acute written and oral communication skills.
Ability to respond to emergent after hours work requirements.
Desired Qualifications*
Associate's Degree with trades experience, or Bachelor's Degree in a technical discipline such as HVAC/R Technology, industrial or mechanical engineering.
OSHA 40 hour training or similar.
Basic knowledge of facilities systems and management processes.
