Overview

Aerojet Rocketdyne offers a complete line of propulsion products for launch vehicles ranging from missile defense to advanced hypersonic propulsion. These products have been used in a wide variety of government and commercial applications, including the main engines for the Space Shuttle, Atlas and Delta launch vehicles, and High Altitude Defense Systems.

We are seeking a Fabrication Mechanic for a day shift opportunity. This position will be located at our facility in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
100% - Working to close tolerances, perform to varying degreees of difficulty fabrication operations to form, fit, fabricate, repair and test a variety of complicated production and developmental space propulsion details, precision parts, assemblies and related tools. Pressure test, inspect and perform thermal expansion and related tests on a variety of space related parts and assemblies. Support other trades in fabricating complex major assemblies involving manufacturing, assembly and test operations. The tasks to which the employee may be assigned will include one or more of the following types of work performed by a Fabrication Mechanic:

  • Fabricate chamber tubes top close tolerances using various precision instruments. Form, contour, spank, fit and inspect tubes, using proper handling procedures to ensure configuration and quality requirements are met.

  • Select and adapt proper tooling, methods, procedures and operational sequences to form and fabricate a variety of objects ranging from the simple to unusual and difficult details and sub-assemblies, working from broad verbal instructions and complicated drawings, operation sheets and general specifications. Properly interpret geometric position and feature control specifications and use handbook formulae and applied math including trigonometry and algebra to perform calculations. Work with a variety of metals including stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, columbium, silver and others, using a wide variety of hand tools, machines and equipment.

  • Assemble chamber and related components, sub-assemblies and details, ensuring proper alignment of details and related hardware using appropriate precision and optical measuring instruments. Apply and remove necessary hardware and instrumentation in preparation of furnace brazing of chamber, including loading and pressure checking. After chamber removal, perform visual inspection as required.

  • Perform helium, thermal expansion and water pressure testing. Install and remove chamber from centroid as required in preparation for welding, machining and assembly operations. Use appropriate tooling and mechanical devices to install and fit complicated engine hardware.

  • As required, assist assembly, heat treat, machine and weld shops, inspection or other functions and groups with operations relating to or involving rocket fabrication, rework, set up and assembly, and fabrication and preparation of details, parts or other items to be brazed, welded, heat treated, or modified. Examples include, but are not limited to, casting the silver throat and fabricating the box section of nozzle. Make recommendations to modify details, tooling and processes as required for product improvements and operational efficiencies.

  • Maintain computerized and manual records, reports and logs on a variety of details and hardware such as, but not limited to, dimensions, repairs, deficiencies, and precious metal and tube inventories. Operate hoists, lifting devices, and fork lift truck as required.

  • Comply with federal and state environmental and safety regulations to conform to company guidelines and procedures including the wearing of safety glasses, respirators and other equipment in the use, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Exercise care in handling compressed gases to ensure safe working conditions and to preserve a healthy environment.

  • Perform other related duties of a comparable or lower skill level as assigned such as hydrostatics and helium testing on a wide variety of parts. As required, instruct and check work of one or two other fabricators to provide direction and coaching involving new processes, procedures and other quality related issues.

    Maintain a clean and orderly work area. Refer only the most unusual or difficult situations to working leader or supervisor.

Requirements

Required: 0-4 years of directly related experience. 2-3 years trade school highly desirable.

Prior experience in the Aerospace industry is a plus.

Position level will be filled based on education and experience of identfied candidate.

Requires well rounded knowledge of applied mathematics including, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and handbook formulae to read and interpret drawings, specifications and complicated sketches. Basic computer skills and the ability to navigate through manufacturing and quality systems.

Requires ability to operate a variety of fabricating machines and precision measuring instruments.

Must have a thorough knowledge of fabrication practices including characteristics of metals, alloys and non-metals.

The level at which the successful candidate will be employed is dependent on the skills, experience and knowledge they possess.

US Citizenship required. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is regularly expected to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, stoop and kneel.

The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee will need to work near moving mechanical parts and in loud working conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes, chemicals or airborne particles. The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions).

This position is for 1st Shift, however 2nd Shift may be needed to meet changing business demands. Position level will be filled based on education and experience of identified candidate. Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each) Perform a variety of duties to assemble, mount, and test development and production space propulsion systems, components, and rigs. 40% - Under direction of supervision or higher grade mechanic, work from procedures, drawings/prints, work instructions and specifications while interfacing with engineering to meet balancing, assembling, mounting, and testing requirements on new or development hardware. Assist in the cleaning, assembly, setup and pressure testing of components, rigs and facilities. 40% - Where method of work is specified, follow established procedures/work instructions or work with higher grade mechanic to operate and maintain various support equipment, making simple modifications as required. 10% - Regularly work with mechanics hand tools and specialty tools on light to medium weight parts. Occasionally work in an awkward or strained position using manual or mechanically assisted devises. 5% - Work with methods and operations engineers to assist in devising and developing improved tooling and process changes in both the assembly and test processes. Occasionally participate in investigations by analyzing data, diagnosing problems and recommending solutions. 5% - Audit records, analyze and compute data and maintain logs to assure compliance to departmental procedures and customer requirements. Comply with Federal & State Environmental and Safety regulations, as well as conform to Company guidelines and procedures for operation of both test facilities and space propulsion systems in assembly areas. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection.
