Job Duties

Norfolk State University's (NSU) Department of Computer Science seeks applicants for the position of Instructor of Computer Science to begin in fall 2023. The Computer Science Department values faculty who balance excellent teaching with active scholarship.

Candidates should be able to teach a wide variety of undergraduate courses in Computer Science and software engineering, and graduate courses in their area(s) of expertise. The undergraduate computer science program is accredited by ABET and the university is recognized by NSA/DHS as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense.

Faculty responsibilities include:

1.Develop and teach undergraduate software engineering and computer science courses.

2.Contribute to program and curriculum development and review and assess program for effectiveness.

3.Participate in recruitment activities.

4.Participate in ongoing assessment and accreditation activities.

5.Promote student development and academic achievement through advising, mentoring, and tutoring.

6.Maintain student records, respecting FERPA and other privacy standards consistent with accrediting agency standards.

7.Hold office hours and attend department, college, and university meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Candidate must possess a Master's degree or higher in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field at the time of appointment.

2.Considerable knowledge and skills in teaching in computer science or software engineering is expected. Alternatively, strong potential to gain such knowledge and skills through education, practical training, or research background will also be considered.

3.Demonstrated ability to communicate to a diverse student-body audience, both verbally and in writing, with emphasis applied to commitment to diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:

1.Industry experience or a demonstrated record of research through publications or grants in the software engineering or computer science disciplines.

2.Teaching experience or active research in software engineering.

3.Considerable experience with student recruitment and retention.

4.Possesses ability to collect and analyze student related data, especially recruitment, retention, graduation data, and to effectively write reports.
