Job Duties

Norfolk State University seeks an individual with experience in scholarly activity and administrative responsibilities at the level of Associate Professor or Full Professor to serve as the Chair for the Department of Computer Science.

Norfolk State university is a public, urban, comprehensive University with an enrollment of 5,400 of which more than 10 percent are graduate students. Founded in 1935, the University is located in the Hampton Roads area in the city of Norfolk and is one of 15 public four-year institutions of higher education, and one of five HBCUs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. NSU has approximately 1,000 faculty and staff, five academic schools and colleges, and an annual operating budget in excess of $190 million.

Responsibilities include:

1.Curriculum oversight, program review, and program assessment, including, but not limited to, development,implementation and evaluation of philosophy and objectives of the computer science education program.

2.Faculty and staff workload assignment, to include, but not limited to, academic advising, teaching schedules, and committee assignments.

3.Course management, including editing and preparing the course schedules.

4.Budget development and management in accordance with the University's Strategic Plan and as set forth by Office of Planning and Budget.

5.Maintenance of the personnel records of faculty and staff.

6.Evaluation of academic and professional faculty and departmental staff.

7.Oversight of departmental committees.

8.Report preparation and submission.

9.Compliance with accreditation standards and University, state, and federal regulations.



  1. Departmental compliance with University policies and procedures.

  2. Identification of program outcomes, in conjunction with departmental faculty, and providing evidence that graduates have attained those outcomes.

  3. Infusion of technology and other instructional strategies into the curriculum.

  4. Collaboration with area private, public, military, and academic partners to promote opportunities for faculty and students.

  5. Participation in professional development activities.

  6. Develop and evaluate student admission, progression, retention, and graduation policies within the framework of the controlling institution.

  7. Other duties as assigned by the Dean, College of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Candidate must possess an earned doctorate in Computer Science or a related field.

2.Record of scholarly achievement in teaching, research and service that merits tenure at the level of associate or full professor in Computer Science.

3.Demonstrated experience in academic program leadership showing increasing levels of responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications:

1.Three or more years experience in higher education preferred.

2.Record of scholarly achievements and teaching effectiveness.

3.Substantial experience obtaining grants and contracts.

4.Strong project management and organizational skills.

5.Excellent communication(oral, written and presentation) skills.

6.Personal research experience aligns well with the department initiatives and programs.
