Job Duties

The Department of Computer Science at Norfolk State University (NSU) seeks applicants for the position of Tenure-Track Assistant Professor-Computer Science (CS) to begin in Fall 2024. The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at Norfolk State University is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Computer Science Program Criteria.

The university is recognized by NSA/DHS as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense. Successful candidates will be able to teach a wide variety of undergraduate courses in CS and software engineering (see course list here), and to develop and teach graduate courses in their area(s) of expertise. The Computer Science Department expects faculty to balance excellent teaching with active scholarship. Faculty responsibilities include the ability to:

  • Develop and teach undergraduate software engineering and computer science courses for face-to-face, hybrid, and online delivery.

  • Contribute to program and curriculum development and implementation.

  • Participate in ongoing assessment and accreditation processes.

  • Promote student development and academic achievement through outreach, recruitment, advising, mentoring, and tutoring.

  • Participate in all aspects of the department, school, and university's missions.

  • Pursue grants, conduct research, and submit publications.

Minimum Qualifications

1.A doctoral degree in Computer Science with an emphasis in software engineering.

2.Industry experience or a demonstrated record of research through publications and/or grants

in the software engineering or computer science disciplines.

Additional Considerations

1.Candidate must have received a doctoral degree in Computer Science, Software

Engineering, or a related field by the start date of the position.

2.Candidates must possess considerable knowledge and skills in teaching computer science

or software engineering. Knowledge and skills gained through education, practical training,

or research will also be considered.

3.Candidates must demonstrate the ability to engage and communicate both verbally and in

writing to diverse audiences, including students.
