Summary of Job Duties:

The Art Instructor will teach Theater/Acting and/or other performance/visual arts of expertise (music, dance, stagecraft, film production, etc.) to elementary or middle school-age students. Instructors will set learning outcomes and lead students to demonstrate learnings in performance with evidence in the mastery of skills/subjects taught. Based on the theme of the camp, "Art in Action," the Instructors will incorporate Emotional Well-being skills (which will be trained) in respective sessions and lead students to the final product that showcases art skills learned.

In addition, instructors must be available to participate in the mandatory pre-camp training/orientation the week prior to camp. The exact schedule will be shared upon hire. Instructors must be available on the last day of the camp, 11:00 am

  • 6:00pm for the final rehearsal and showcase.

The Instructor will report to the CI Program Coordinator and work closely with the Artist in Residence (Art Director) on art programming and showcase. This is a grant-funded hourly position at the rate of $16 - $20 per hour, depending on the experience, and effective June 1. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent and experience working with children or youth in a chosen art

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research and develop age/grade-appropriate lessons for art sessions using applicable standards of learning for elementary and middle school-age students;

  • Manage and deliver lessons to 15-20 students per group through interactive activities to keep students engaged at all times;

  • Trained on Emotional Wellbeing skills by CI Program Coordinator and apply learnings from the training in designing the lesson plans;

  • Lesson delivery incorporates regular "assessment" to ensure learning and adaptation;

  • Work in collaboration with Artist in Residence (as well as the Program Coordinator) to ensure the students acquire skills to contribute to the final performance;

  • Work in collaboration with other instructors to provide seamless coordination of respective Art forms that demonstrate student's learning in the final performance;

  • Provide a written weekly lesson plan showing the plan of action per week;

Create and maintain an active, engaging, and safe learning environment for students;

  • Serve as a positive role model to all students;

  • Ensure all youth and children are properly supervised and safe at all times;

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience and expertise in teaching chosen art form for children, youth, or young adults

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and manage groups of children or youth

  • Ability to inspire students and create a stimulating learning environment;

  • Ability to keep students engaged in activities in a way to avoid negative behaviors;

  • Ability to provide supervision to assistants, volunteers, or youth workers to ensure their support and participation in the delivery of teaching/ quality program delivery;

  • Energetic and passionate about a role model for all children and youth;

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills;

  • Spanish helpful;

  • Must be available for set program schedule (see above);

  • Must have own transportation to the program site;

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
