Description:

Position Summary

To provide service to the medical community and patients by performing requested laboratory tests in a timely manner, offering state-of-the-art methods and fostering a learning environment for students, residents and new employees rotating through the Microbiology laboratory. The individual must demonstrate expertise in the areas of Bacteriology, Mycology and Mycobacteriology.

Duties & Responsibilities

Perform and interpret patient testing in areas of responsibility including all manual and automated testing. Plan, prepare, assign, coordinate and supervise workflow for areas of responsibility assuring that all patient testing is performed in a timely manner.

Teach medical students, medical technology students, residents and new employees in procedures and microbiologic techniques and document orientation/training and competency testing. Review, update and revise all procedure manuals, quality control practices and quality assurance monitors on an annual basis, or more frequently if necessary. Research, evaluate and initiate new state-of-the-art methods to continually provide the highest quality of patient care.

Investigate and resolve all problems encountered with testing and/or equipment. Institute and monitor corrective measures. Evaluate employees' work performance and professionalism on an ongoing basis.

Counsel and be supportive to employees. Participate in performance appraisals. Inventory supplies on a routine basis and order supplies as necessary to assure no interruption in patient testing.

Assist in the FY budget preparation with bids, standing orders and capital budget items. Perform employee time card calculations, documenting pertinent information regarding employee benefits (vacation, sick leave, etc.). Review daily all outgoing laboratory reports, quality control and equipment performance for areas of responsibility. Maintain proficiency in specialty areas by participating in ongoing continuing education.

Maintain a harmonious working relationship among laboratory staff. Provide the staff with leadership, serve as a mentor and role model and practice continuous quality improvement in all areas. Perform other duties as assigned.Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent.

  • Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing for general supervisory personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1461.

Note: It is recommended that, in order to ensure consistent application of these qualifications, the evaluation and verification of an applicant's credentials be accomplished through the cooperative efforts of an experienced clinical laboratory technologist and the personnel department in a manner which will preserve the applicant's anonymity.

Preferred Qualifications

Expertise in Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology and Mycology.

Must have had medical technology training and a minimum of five year's experience working in clinical microbiology.

Must be able to organize, prioritize and coordinate all activities within the sections of responsibility.

Must have good communication skills in order to teach microbiologic techniques and procedures and speak with physicians, patients and staff.

Must have good writing skills in order to update and write procedures and manuals.

Must be able to operate and perform troubleshooting of equipment and instruments in areas of responsibility.

Must be able to perform and interpret testing within areas of responsibility (Gram stains, AFB stains, DFA stains, isolation and biochemical testing for organism identification, susceptibility testing, manual and automated, ELISA testing, instrument testing, etc.)

Must be aware of types of pathogenic organisms that may be present in clinical material collected from various anatomical sites.
