Job Description:

Job Summary

The Corporate Accounting Director is responsible for overseeing the Technical accounting, Reporting and Planning for the UPS Sponsored Pension plans, Retirement Plans, disability Health & Welfare Plans, Casualty insurance and Self-Insurance as well external reporting processes to ensure all governmental filings (e.g., Securities and Exchange Commission [SEC] forms 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, etc.) are completed in an efficient and timely manner.

The Corporate Accounting Director oversees the footnotes for the SEC filings (e.g., 10-K, 10-Q, etc.), and prepares financial data and calculations contained within the filings. This position reviews documentation on accounting treatment for these technical issues. This role also works with external auditors to provide any requested information on these issues in the performance of their audit. The incumbent will directly supervise accounting managers and have indirect supervision of accounting supervisors and accounting specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares/reviews related SEC filings and reviews financial data, calculations and disclosures contained within the filings.

  • Prepares/reviews other financial and regulatory filings for the company, including filings with the Department of Commerce, Department of Transportation, and Department of Labor.

  • Compiles and reviews expense reports relating to pension expenses for each business unit (e.g. Domestic Small Package, International, and Supply Chain Solutions).

  • Prepares/reviews presentations for the audit committee and senior management on various financial topics.

  • Provides updates to senior management on new and proposed accounting guidance, and the potential impact on the company.

  • Prepares and reviews updates to the company's internal accounting policies and procedures manual, to ensure that accounting personnel in other parts of the company have access to current UPS accounting policies.

  • Coordinates with external auditors to ensure accuracy and completeness of filings.

  • Attends planning meetings with external actuarial providers and internal departments (e.g., Human Resources, etc.) to discuss annual benefit planning.

  • Updates the per capita rates using the confirmed benefit plan expense data provided by the actuaries to plan out the upcoming year.

  • Prepares annual memos for business units to communicate per capita rates and how rates were formulated.

Leads and Develops Others

  • Manages people processes (e.g. performance management, career development, training, etc.).

  • Identifies individual and team skill gaps and developmental opportunities to facilitate individual and team development.

  • Ensures that direct and indirect reports have documented performance goals and detailed plans to achieve those goals.

  • Provides frequent performance feedback in a consistent, fair, and objective manner to facilitate open communication and encourage continuous performance improvement.

  • Holds others accountable to established performance levels to achieve individual and group goals and maintain consistent practices across the organization.

  • Resolves individual and group performance issues in accordance with policies and procedures.

  • Coaches others and provides ongoing feedback and support.

  • Identifies opportunities to involve others in new and challenging work assignments that advance the skills and capabilities of individuals and the organization.

Reviews Accounting Entries and Related Documentation

  • Reviews accounting entries and documentation for complex accounting areas (e.g. stock-based compensation, casualty insurance, pension, etc).

  • Reviews certain annual and quarterly accounting processes.

  • Provides supporting documentation and other materials to the external auditors for annual and quarterly audit and review processes.

Preferences

  • Evaluates compliance to GAAP methods; applies accounting knowledge to complex or unusual contexts; establishes company accounting controls and procedures; anticipates and addresses the impact of new accounting practices.

  • Makes recommendations to improve practices or procedures in compliance with GAAP.

  • Resolves complex problems; advises others in minimizing company risk; adapts organizational procedures or processes to meet new or changed regulations; provides expertise in accounting compliance issues; identifies compliance policies and procedures for new business situations.

  • Writes complex technical documents; advises others in improving technical writing skills; identifies emerging issues in the field of technical writing in specialized area of expertise.

  • Considers industry and financial trends when making account decisions; understands critical aspects of business models and operating structures to provide input into decisions.).

  • Experience with U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing and reporting.

  • Experience working with a Big 4 (Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PwC, KPMG) Public Accounting Firm (or similar firms).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Certification
  • Required
  • Must have knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Bachelor's Degree (or internationally comparable degree) in Business Admin, Accounting or Finance
  • Required
  • Master's Degree (or internationally comparable degree) in Accounting
  • Preferred
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National of the U.S., an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. for this employer

  • Employer will not sponsor a visa for this or future positions

  • Must be currently located in the same geographic location as the job or willing to relocate yourself

  • Must have experience supervising others
