What you'll be doing...

At Verizon, we don't just wait for the future, we build it. We are looking for a design practitioner contributing to customer-centered design process in product, technology, and business strategies.

You are a highly capable design practitioner who can contribute experience and technical capability in at least one of our core disciplines (Research and Insights, Product Strategy, Interface Architecture, and Visual Systems). You have the desire and potential to grow beyond your core areas of expertise and are accountable for your growth as an individual practitioner.

You produce sound, effective design solutions and collaborate with your team to generate ideas. You actively seek to deepen design skills and sharpen abilities. You develop productive relationships with senior-level partners in product, tech, and business, and practice consulting through active listening and present rationale for the team's solutions. Outside of your project, you externalize your work and seek input from others.

This role will be based out of two New York offices (13 Crosby & 140 West) with some work days in Basking Ridge, NJ.

What you'll be doing

  • Generate multiple credible design solutions

  • Engage in divergent/convergent individual and group work

  • Identify design problems and opportunities within brief/context

  • Design within an established set of rules (patterns, guidelines, constraints, principles, etc.)

  • Articulate user, business, or technical reasoning for design decision

  • Maintain organized working files and project directories

  • Explore, refine, and document solution thoroughly

  • Maintain focus on detail

  • Maintain fluency in shared tools and software

  • Uphold and maintain standards

  • Objectively evaluate and refine concepts based on learnings from prototypes

  • Target appropriate methods and fidelity based on learning objectives

  • Create prototypes to: (1) better understand the problem or requirements (2) communicate and create consensus around designs, or (3) better demonstrate design intent or feasibility.

Customer focus

  • Actively explore target customer behavior

  • Engage in insight gathering activities (informal or formal, primary or secondary)

  • Analyze observations to develop insights

  • Create communications to share key insights

  • Design solutions that leverage user insights

  • Understand and articulate customer value exchange

Business acumen

  • Research competitive products, industry trends, and topics

  • Understand Verizon's changing business including business model and organizational structure

  • Design solutions within a business context and revenue model (including product release cycle)

  • Understand the motivations and drivers of colleagues and partners

  • Consider the organizational impact and cost of proposed solutions

  • Recognize business value propositions and understand product within the Xcel's landscape

Design for development

  • Maintain knowledge of Verizon's UI standards (iOS, Android, Web, Retail, etc.)

  • Monitor emerging technology and future impacts

  • Work within front- and back-end constraints and capabilities

  • Design systems for targeted technologies

  • Evaluate solutions for appropriateness and viability

What we're looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Must be currently participating in the adfellows program.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Even better if you have:

  • Previous experience designing and launching a range of digital products (apps, websites, and software) across platforms (mobile, tablet, desktop, and connected devices), ideally for large audiences

  • Bachelor's Degree in Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Sciences, Communication Design, or related discipline

  • Capable of delivering in one or more core design skills including:

  • Research & Insights

  • Digital Product Strategy

  • Interface Architecture

  • Visual Systems

  • Confidence in individual expertise and perspective, but eagerness to learn from others.

  • Experience in secondary areas such as prototyping, front end development, user research, visual design, prototyping, service design, and/or content strategy.

  • Familiarity with human-centered design methodologies, empathy for end users, and passion for teaching and learning from others to shape process and culture.

  • Expertise in core design and prototyping tools including Sketch, InVision, Framer, Principle, etc. with an interest in exploring new tools and processes.
