Recruitment Salary: $31,688 - $42,000

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The North Carolina Aquariums at Pine Knoll Shores is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Exhibits Fabricator. The position fabricates and maintains 3D Aquarium components including habitat inserts, tactile 3D models, interactive pieces, and props for use in permanent and temporary exhibits as well as live animal habitats. Projects may include exhibits with complex features that incorporate multiple materials such as solid surface and sheet acrylics, curved and custom wood, exhibits fixtures and props with intricate structures, and building additions. This position serves as an integral member of the exhibits team at the PKS Aquarium, as well as, in support of exhibits for the NC Aquariums Division.

Daily Duties include:

  • Fabricating exhibit components, tank enclosures, habitat inserts, kiosks, LSS supports, exhibit signs, interpretive panels, large format graphics, temporary walls, cabinetry, exhibit furniture, and other products necessary for the Aquarium's permanent and temporary exhibits. Work must be safe for use with live animals and people (visitors, staff, volunteers, etc.).

  • Fabricating indoor or outdoor exhibits and props that may use a variety of materials including wood, plastic laminates, PVC boards, acrylic, hardware, fiberglass products, metal, paints, and adhesives.

  • Under direction of the Exhibits Curator and collaborating with the Exhibits team, the Fabricator creates conceptual and final designs for components for aquatically themed exhibits and displays.

  • Repairing and maintaining exhibits as well as the overall Aquarium facility.

  • Collaborating with Exhibits and Operations staff to maintain exhibits and various facility repairs and projects.

  • Keeping supplies stocked for Exhibits shop.

  • Ensuring proper care, handling, and safe use of hand & power tools following OSHA standards; overseeing and maintaining equipment and work area of the Exhibits shop.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must have a valid NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

  • Ability to lift 50lbs.

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • Must be able to understand and work from notes, sketches, and construction blueprints; will need to determine and produce written task and material lists for work assignments.

  • Must be a self-starter and have a strong work ethic.

  • Be able to work efficiently, often on simultaneous projects, and be able to meet deadlines.

  • Requires close attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to work as part of a team.

  • Because every project is custom, all projects require organization, creative solutions, and good communication from project assignment, through final review and signoff.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated experience in custom fabrication, carpentry, framing, repair, construction, and cabinetry.

  • Demonstrated experience with plastics, fiberglass, adhesives, resins, low voltage electrical wiring or mold-making, and exhibits for wet/submerged environments.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing a Bill of Materials using blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.

  • Demonstrated experience working with hand and power tools and knowledge of safety requirements and protective equipment.

Management Preferences:

  • Experience with creating technical drawings (using AutoCAD, Sketchup, Vectorworks or other software), as well as the ability to interpret and work from them.

  • Experience with 3D printing.

  • Experience with laser cutting and engraving.

Bachelor's degree in art, art history, design or related field from an appropriately accredited institution with course work in three-dimensional design and two years of experience in museum exhibit design;

or

an equivalent combination of education and experience.Section/Unit Description:

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks and sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 2,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.
