Job Summary:

The Executive Editor is the most senior journalism leader at Wisconsin Public Radio. They are responsible for ensuring WPR's Wisconsin journalism is relevant, timely, and factual. This position oversees the daily news magazine show and a team of reporters and editors located in bureaus across the state. The role will require frequent collaboration across multiple departments including programming, marketing and development. The Executive Editor also manages relationships with external partners. This position reports to the Chief Content Officer.

WPR is a premier source of news in Wisconsin with an audience of nearly a million across radio and digital platforms. Our newsroom is digitally savvy and deeply committed to telling stories about Wisconsin and its residents that provide a deeper understanding of the events, issues, and ideas shaping our world.

Responsibilities:

Directs and manages the operations of the news department, including establishing a strategic and editorial vision for the unit. Supervises staff and provides editorial leadership. May contribute content.

  • 25% Directs strategic planning initiatives and establishes unit objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources in alignment with the strategic plan
  • 35% Provides editorial leadership, including assigning stories, editing content, and coordinating coverage with other managers
  • 10% Collaborates with other leadership members to build audience engagement and meet unit goals, and may represent the department in meetings at the senior leadership level
  • 5% Applies editorial judgement and maintains the industry standards of journalistic ethics and excellence
  • 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% May manage special projects
  • 5% May develop and audit the unit budget

Education:

Bachelor's Degree

An emphasis in journalism, communications or related field preferred.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant editorial experience including news management.
  • Extensive journalism experience.
  • Experience scheduling staff and managing employee performance.
  • Proven ability to work across departments to complete complex projects.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, ability to work within tight deadlines and manage competing responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of journalism ethics, newsgathering, and reporting techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in public media.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Wisconsin news, culture, issues and personalities.
  • Experience with document sharing and virtual meeting software.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position currently has the flexibility to occasionally work remotely. Time in-person, in the office will be required depending on operational needs. This position will have the flexibility to be headquartered at one of the following office locations: Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Superior, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Wausau, or Appleton. Remote work and office location flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process. Occasional trips to the WPR headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin will be required.

Salary:

Minimum $91,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Depending on Qualifications

Expected salary range for this position is $91,000 up to $96,000. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.
