Position Summary:

The Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies (GSCS) extends Rice University's academic excellence and outreach through lifelong personal and professional offerings that empower individuals and organizations, foster community, and promote the common good in Houston and beyond.

The Executive Director for Summer Sessions and PreCollege Programs reports directly to the dean and has primary responsibility for overall leadership and coordination for Rice University credit Summer Sessions and noncredit academic Pre-college programs. The Executive Director/Assistant Dean works with the dean, administrative offices, and schools, institutes, and centers to create a collaborative Rice strategy for Summer Sessions and is responsible for developing, implementing, and expanding a robust portfolio of high-quality summer programs. Audiences include Rice undergraduate students, visiting college students, and pre-college students.

The incumbent collaborates with faculty and/or staff leadership to design and market programs, develops long range plans, and manages budget and success metrics. They will manage program staff, administrative functions and may teach a course, seminar or workshop.

Workplace Requirements

This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration after successful completion of probationary period. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Proposed Hiring Range: Minimum annual salary $95,900 commensurate with qualifications and experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 4+ years of experience in:

  • Non-credit summer programming

  • Experience managing team members at multiple levels

  • Experience or interest in emerging educational delivery models (online, hybrid, residential)

  • In lieu of the education/experience requirement, additional related education and/or experience, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.

Skills:

  • Ability to develop complex and/or multiple program partnerships and funding sources

  • Knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans

  • Ability to develop and initiate new strategies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage project simultaneously

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

  • Excellent data analysis skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet expected deadlines and schedules

  • Adept at problem-solving, creating contingency plans, and handling issues when necessary

  • Excellent client service orientation

  • Ability to lead and motivate others

Preferences:

  • Master's or PhD in education-related field

  • Experience developing and marketing programs for non-traditional students

  • Experience in higher education administration, policies, student services, and risk management

  • Experience teaching at a college level

Essential Functions:

  • Leads the development and implementation of major program(s)

  • Collaborates with administration, faculty and/or staff leadership to design program and establish long range strategic and operational plans

  • Oversees the operation, administration and evaluation of programs

  • Identifies and implements program changes to ensure alignment with mission and program effectiveness

  • Develop and implements strategies related to outreach, events, communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding

  • Devises and manages financial and budgetary plans for the program(s), approves and monitors expenditures

  • May be responsible for grant preparation and submission or research administration

  • May teach a course, seminar or workshop

  • May supervise small staff (up to three full time staff)

  • Performs all other duties as assigned
