The Executive Director of the Board of Nursing applies expert knowledge in the administration and oversight of the five major programs of the Board of Nursing: nursing licensure, education, practice, discipline, and workforce. The Executive Director ensures that all programs are implemented effectively and in accordance with the statutes and rules that govern the practice of nursing in South Dakota.
The Executive Director administers all operational functions of the Board of Nursing office located in Sioux Falls, SD. This includes the provision of leadership for the development of fiduciary, strategic and governance policies and procedures, management of all Board of Nursing personnel and implementation of Board meetings as often as necessary to conduct the business of the Board. The Executive Director is the spokesperson for the Board of Nursing, interfacing with the healthcare industry, media, governmental agencies, officials and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The Executive Director serves as the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator for South Dakota and serves as a commissioner for the Interstate Commission of Nurse Licensure Compact Administrators.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN).
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Advanced education at the Master's degree level; expertise in the area of nursing regulation, education and practice; knowledge of board governance issues; personnel management , budget and financial management, implementation of statutes and administrative rules. Strong interpersonal skills are required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The knowledge skills and abilities of the position include a strong record of interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals and groups. Leadership skills, the ability to apply evidence to decision making and analytical skills are necessary to make informed decisions. A minimum of 5 years experience in nursing practice, education or regulation is necessary along with an advanced level of education, preferably a Master's degree in nursing.
