The Smeal College of Business at the Pennsylvania State University, one of the largest and most well-respected business schools in the country, seeks an experienced and innovative professional to lead as its Executive Director of the Center for Supply Chain Research (CSCR). Position Summary:

As Executive Director, your primary responsibility is to build the reputation and presence of CSCR among the relevant audiences, especially, corporate executives and faculty of business schools, and help leverage that reputation to strengthen Smeal College's teaching and research programs in the supply chain domain.

In addition to being the director for CSCR, this position is associated with the SC&IS (Supply Chain and Information Systems) department as a non-tenure line faculty position. This could be at the approriate level of one of the following: Teaching professor, clinical professor, research professor, or professor of practice based on the candidate's background.

Key Responsibilities:

Leading the development and implementation of an overall strategy for CSCR by closely working with the CSCR Advisory Board (composed of senior supply chain executive sponsors) and the Dean's Office which includes:

  • Identifying, establishing, and strengthening relationships with CSCR sponsors so the Center continues to operate on a self-funded basis.

  • Operating career fairs that facilitate students who seek internships, co-ops, or post-graduation employment and keeping a pulse of the supply chain and information systems job market.

  • Organizing the Supply Chain Talent Development Symposia, which connects thought leaders, industry experts, and peers around emerging trends in the talent development landscape.

  • Organizing the Supply Chain Leaders' Forum, which connects leading supply chain professionals with academics twice a year to discuss business challenges organizations must address to remain competitive.

  • Collaborating with CSCR sponsors to identify and promote leading-edge learning, training, and research programs.

  • Facilitating academic and industry research and scholarship at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

  • Ensuring long-term financial profitability of the Center, and managing all aspects of the operations of CSCR, including planning, budgeting, and oversight of staff.

  • Develop and deliver lectures and courses for CSCR professional training, executive education programs, and speaking appearances.

  • Engaging Smeal faculty and students, particularly those in the Supply Chain and Information Systems Department, in the activities of the Center.

  • Developing and managing all outreach activities, including member meetings, interactions with media, relationships with other centers and units within Smeal and Penn State, and marketing of the Center to relevant audiences with potential travel.

  • Manage various operational aspects of CSCR, such as maintaining its website and social media messaging, coordinating marketing efforts to promote supply chain at Smeal, and overseeing outreach efforts in supply chain.

Scope and Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role requires effective leadership and management of five full-time employees, as well as oversight of students, temporary workers, and/or volunteers.

Skills and Qualifications:

Strategic Vision: Ability to conceptualize and articulate a clear vision for CSCR, which align with the strategic priorities of Smeal and the University.

Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading and motivating a team. A track record of strategic decision-making and effective team management.

Communication Excellence: Superior written and verbal communication skills.

Analytical Thinking: Proficiency in using data analytics to track, measure, and optimize operations.

Fiscal Management: Experience in budgetary planning and oversight, with a clear understanding of monitoring and tracking financial resources.

Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively across different departments and with external partners, agencies, and consultants to achieve objectives.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A master's degree required with terminal degree preferred.

  • At least 10 years' experience in supply chain management.

This position is a renewable term appointment.
