Metro State University, Minnesota's public, urban university, and four-time recipient of the Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award is seeking to hire an Executive Director of Academic Advising. This is a full-time position within the Department of Academic Advising in the Academic Affairs Division.

Responsibilities:

  • Exercise supervisory authority so that applicable labor agreements and plans are equitably administered and employees under their jurisdiction will effectively perform assigned job duties to achieve the annual objectives of the section.

  • Provides leadership for Academic Advising initiatives and programming.

  • Leads continuous quality improvement initiatives for Academic Advising to align with and support strategic planning for the university program.

  • Provides essential services of and participation by Academic Advising in university-wide endeavors, such as the Student Success Council, the Academic and Student Affairs Executive Committee, the Leadership Assembly, Strategic Enrollment Management goals, Student Orientation, and ad hoc task forces or work groups.

  • Serves as the budget officer for the Department of Academic Advising, with oversight over all budgetary matters.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the Academic Advising program and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Position Qualifications:

The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose application materials clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position:

  • Education: At minimum: Master's degree plus three years of advanced professional experience in a content- specific field or Bachelor's degree plus four years of advanced professional experience in a content- specific field or an equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education and/or advanced professional experience.

  • 2years of managerial/supervisory experience of professional staff (excludes student staff) and skills to direct and assess the work of a complex program serving the diverse needs of the entire university population across multiple physical locations.

  • 2 years of experience as an academic advisor at a four-year university.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of a complex set of principles, policies, practices, and data applicable to academic advising programs-including those applicable to best practices in academic advising and transfer student advising, supporting non-native speakers of English and first-generation college students, and working with adult learners-in order to assure compliance and to create complementary program policies, procedures, and common practices.

  • Sufficient critical analysis skills to evaluate, prioritize, and resolve complex issues at the university level, including the ability to forecast future academic advising services based on historical patterns and university strategic plans.

  • Demonstrated success working with diverse populations, including but not limited to working with non-native speakers of English, contemporary/adult/post-traditional learners, students with disabilities.

  • Ability to identify and interpret applicable laws and regulations of state and federal agencies and expectations of other governing bodies (e.g. Higher Learning Commission).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to innovate solutions to situations without precedent or in definition of new directions.

  • Fiduciary skills to obtain and allocate sufficient resources for a program with four functional clusters.

  • Data analysis, reporting, writing, speaking, and statistical skills sufficient to persuade, negotiate, and influence internal and external clientele in order to obtain desired results with a broad impact on the university.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff of the university.

Physical Requirements of the Job:

Light: Requires occasionally transporting such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others and/or transporting light objects frequently. The position may require movement throughout building(s) to a significant degree.
