Location: Remote. Most be located in Service Area.

Salary: $112,000-$120,000/year

Organization & Background

The Northwest Osteopathic Medical Foundation was created in 1985 from the sale proceeds of Eastmoreland Hospital, an osteopathic hospital in Southeast Portland. The Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 public charity serving the people of the Northwest by providing resources for programs to improve the health and wellness of the community and to promote a greater understanding of the distinctive aspects of the osteopathic medical profession and osteopathic principles and practices. We support and advance the osteopathic profession through educational, charitable, and scientific purposes. The Foundation serves the northwest states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, and Montana.

Over the past 5 years, the total number of licensed osteopathic physicians nationwide has increased about 30% to a total of 149,000. Growth in the profession throughout the Northwest has occurred not just in the number of physicians, but with the number of osteopathic medical schools as every northwest state, save Alaska, now has an osteopathic medical school (with 2 in Montana).

Position Overview:

The Northwest Osteopathic Medical Foundation seeks an Executive Director who will lead the Foundation with the development of a new strategic plan, renewed focus in fundraising, and emphasis on collaborations with the five northwest states. The Board envisions immense opportunities for dramatic growth in the Foundation through a motivated leader, centered on the understanding and support of osteopathic principles and practices, who can continue and develop relationships throughout the northwest states.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibilities for the Foundation's programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. The Director will support the board in their leadership and development, implement fundraising, public relations, and marketing functions of the Foundation maximizing volunteer resources. The director will be supported by the Board of Directors and have collaborative resources with the state osteopathic associations in the northwest states.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Fundraising and Investment Management

  • Engaging key leaders and stakeholders in the osteopathic community to support the work of the Foundation through major and planned gifts.

  • Building a Membership Program to increase contributions to the Foundation.

  • Working with an investment firm to insure maximum return on endowment investments.

  • Collaboration and support for the osteopathic state associations of Idaho, Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Oregon.

  • Attending virtually or in-person the osteopathic state association CME programs and enhancing physician awareness of the Foundation's grant support.

  • Convening regular meetings with the leadership of the state osteopathic associations to explore areas of opportunity, concerns, and opportunities for collaboration.

  • Share educational opportunities with State Associations and Members.

  • Board Engagement

  • Actively engage and work with Foundation Board Members.

  • Build a strategic plan, fundraising plan and systems/policies for Foundation oversight.

  • Implement a board recruitment and training program.

  • Develop an annual budget and prepare regular financial reports.

  • Develop programming in conjunction with strategic plan.

  • Scholarship/Grant Making

  • Evaluate current system of scholarship/grant awarding.

  • Implement a marketing and advertising campaign for scholarship applicants.

  • Implement a marketing plan for award winners/state associations.

  • Foundation Management

  • Oversee Financial Management of the endowment.

  • Serve as the administrator for all Foundation activities including membership, board, state association engagement.

  • Serve as financial lead for all deposits, expenses, reporting, etc.

  • Develop ongoing marketing campaigns via web, social media, print, etc.

  • Execute all administrative functions of the Foundation.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of fundraising, preference for medical/osteopathic/health care fundraising.

  • 3+ years in a leadership role at a nonprofit including board management and operations.

  • Experience with major gifts, endowments, planned giving programs

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Experience with membership programs, preferred but not required.

Work Environment:

  • This is a full-time remote position to be located in the 5 state service area (Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana).

  • Attendance at osteopathic colleges, conferences, etc. may be required, as approved by the board.

  • Equipment including computer and cell phone will be provided.

This role provides candidates with:

Salary of $112,000-$120,000/year
