Kansas Funeral Directors Association Seeks Executive DirectorThe Kansas Funeral Directors Association (KFDA) is a statewide 501( c )(6) association representing Kansas funeral homes, funeral directors and embalmers located in Topeka, Kansas. The KFDA is seeking an Executive Director (ED)to manage the association and its affiliated companies which include a for-profit corporation and a 501( c )(3) charitable foundation. The current Executive Director is retiring at the end of the year.The Association’s mission is “To promote and support funeral professionals in Kansas”.Position SummaryThe Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the association and works under the direction of a Board of Directors. The ED is responsible for the overall operations of the association. Candidates should have experience with a similar sized organization preferably an association and should be familiar with principles of association management. A candidate should have an understanding of financial management, strategic planning, experience in convention and meeting planning, publications, marketing and public relations, and lobbying. They should have qualities to work effectively with members, government agencies and partner organizations. The work schedule is Monday through Friday and occasional evening and weekend hours are expected. Ability to travel to meetings across Kansas and the United States is a must. This is not a remote position.ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Board RelationshipThe ED will work with and under the direction of the Board of Directors to carry out mission of association. The ED plans Board meetings including making hotel arrangements, preparing the Agenda with President, sending out meeting notices and taking minutes. The ED contributes to the development of the association’s organizational goals and objectives. It is important for the ED to stay informed concerning emerging issues in the profession and keep the Board informed. The Board meets Quarterly with one of the meetings held via Zoom.Fiscal ManagementManages and provides oversight over the finances of the organization . The ED is responsible for preparing and abiding by an annual budget which is approved by the Board. This includes knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, bookkeeping, payroll and assuring that taxes and reports are filed with the appropriate government entities. The association uses QuickBooks.Maintaining Membership Data BaseIt is the responsibility of the ED to assure a roster of members is maintained in the association’s membership data base, dues notices are sent out, renewals are processed and new members are recruited.AdvocacyThe ED serves as lobbyist for the KFDA. This involves lobbying on all funeral related issues before the Kansas Legislature, Congress, the State Board of Mortuary Arts, the Office of Vital Statistics and other regulatory agencies. The ED must maintain strong relationship and partnerships with all government officials and those organizations with common goals . The ED assists in the development of legislative policies and strategies in conjunction with the Board of Directors and the Legislative Committee. The ED drafts legislation when necessary. They must have the ability to become familiar with and understand the Kansas and Federal laws concerning funeral service.CommunicationsWorks with staff to maintain the association’s website and sending out blast e-mails when needed. Oversee the publication of an association magazine eight times a year. The association currently use InDesign. This involves writing and finding articles, editing the magazine and recruiting and billing advertisers.Event PlanningPlan the association’s annual convention and trade show, district meetings and continuing education seminars. Responsibilities includes locating and making arrangements with facilities for meetings, preparing agendas, finding speakers, preparing meeting brochures, and tracking registrations. Requires attending the meetings which are held across Kansas.Office Building ManagementOversees the general management of the KFDA office building. This includes managing building maintenance and drafting and negotiating leases with tenants.ProfessionalismThe Executive Director should have strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills since they will be, along with the President a spokesperson for the KFDA. The applicant must represent the KFDA professionally and positively.Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Association or organization management experience, three (3) years preferred.
  • Law degree and knowledge of funeral service is a plus
  • Experience in developing and implementing a budget including knowledge of QuickBooks and accounting principles applicable to not-for-profit associations.
  • Knowledge of computer programs especially Microsoft Office and database programs.
  • Knowledge of the legislative process.
  • Ability to travel to attend annual convention, conferences in Kansas and National conferences outside of Kansas.
  • The position requires the Executive Director to sit, stand , walk and speak. Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. It requires computer knowledge and use.
