Job Description

This individual has responsibility for providing leadership for Clinical Development Programs and staff. This staff consists of, primarily, the clinical leads (directors, senior directors) for programs focused in Hepatology and Gastroenterology within the MNK portfolio.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provides strong scientific and strategic leadership to assigned Clinical Programs and staff.

  • Models, teaches, and instills constructive leadership attributes, consistent with Mallinckrodt's values.

  • Provides Mallinckrodt process and organizational guidance to assigned staff, as necessary.

  • Performs HR responsibilities for assigned staff, consistent with MNK's policies and procedures.

Department specific/Non-essential responsibilities:

Minimum Requirements

Education required/ preferred:

  • U.S. licensed Medical Doctor (MD or equivalent qualification) preferred; PharmD or PhD also acceptable.

Experience / Skills:

  • Approximately 10 years of relevant clinical research experience working for a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or CRO company; late phase development experience in Hepatology, including proof of concept and P3/registration intent trials, is required.

  • Extensive experience personally designing and overseeing clinical trials, as well as analyzing and interpreting complex datasets.

  • Experience preparing for, and participating as the clinical lead in, key regulatory interactions/meetings (EoP2, pre-NDA, SPA meetings, etc.)

  • Experience in evaluating new business opportunities, as well as integrating such opportunities into a large portfolio.

  • Experience working in a complex, dynamic, matrix-based environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and diverse projects concurrently, while still meeting timeline and project goals.

  • Command of all Microsoft Office tools.

  • Occasional travel is required for this position.

Organizational Relationship/Scope:

This position will work with multiple functions outside of Clinical Development, particularly clinical operations, medical affairs, and commercial leadership.

The Clinical Pharmacology Group is part of Clinical Development in Science & Technology in Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. It is a highly scientific and leadership role that serves as the functional lead of clinical pharmacology from early clinical development to post marketing support. This position also serves as the scientific and medical/clinical liaison between internal teams and external groups such as clinical operations, vendors (CROs, central laboratories, etc.), investigators, medical monitors, regulatory authorities, medical affairs, commercial, Key Opinion Leaders, Advisory Boards, etc. Essential Functions * Responsible for planning and directing clinical pharmacology components of clinical programs (e.g. clinical development plan/life cycle plan). * Responsible for supporting clinical studies from study design to completion, e.g. study design such as dosing selection, PK/PD sampling scheme, protocol preparation, clinical phase oversight on clinical pharmacology related issues, bioanalytical, PK/PD analysis, and reporting. * Responsible for clinical pharmacology program to support regulatory submission, and providing clinical pharmacology sections in regulatory documents such as IB, IND/NDA/sNDA, as well as Briefing Book. * Responsible for representing clinical pharmacology line function to interact with Health Authorities. * During the pre-clinical stages of drug development works with Research/Biological Sciences to ensure that sufficient preclinical PK/PD knowledge exists to support the design of first in man studies. * Participates in multidisciplinary teams in assessing potential in-licensing opportunities, as requested by line management. * Responsible for Phase I and Clinical Pharmacology studies. * Manage and initiate external collaborations with leaders in clinical pharmacology and Key Opinion Leaders. Education Minimum Requirements: PhD in pharmacology/pharmacokinetics or related field required; or MD with clinical pharmacology experience. Required Skills and Experience * Minimum of 5 years' experience required in clinical pharmacology in pharmaceutical or biotech industry. * Hands on experience with clinical pharmacology summary documents required for Regulatory submissions. * Excellent knowledge and hands-on skills in using Phoenix WinNonlin or other software to conduct compartmental, noncompartmental PK analysis, as well as PK-PD modeling and simulation. * Excellent knowledge in understanding population PK/PD and disease modeling, as well as the application of model assisted drug development from early to late stages. * Knowledge in FDA, EMA and ICH guidances and regulations applicable to Clinical Pharmacology is required. Preferred Skills and Experience * Experience in interaction with Healthy Authority, and led the interaction with Health Authority on clinical pharmacology activities. * Hands-on experience of population PK/PD modeling using NONMEM, R, or other software. * Record of successful publications in the area of clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics. * Comprehensive understanding of worldwide clinical regulatory requirements with working knowledge of drug development process with a proven record in drug development from IND through regulatory submission and commercialization. * Demonstrate thorough understanding of principles of clinical pharmacology including clinical study design, analysis, and interpretation, as well as the application of these approaches to drug development such as clinical trial design and development plans.
