Executive Dir, Research Computing Technologies

Essential Duties

1.Lead the development and implementation of research computing and IT strategies, policies, and procedures in alignment with the organization's goals and objectives. 2. Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to staff.

Cultivate and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment. 3. Collaborate with the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to establish and maintain robust security measures and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards. 4. Establish and maintain governance processes, policies, and standards to ensure internal and external regulations compliance. 5.

Responsible for effective workforce planning. Ensures the organization has the right people with the right skills to meet the business objectives. Assess the organization's current workforce and determine its future staffing needs based on business objectives, growth plans, market trends, and technical advancements. 6.

Ensure the organization's systems are secure, reliable, efficient, and following regulations and standards. 7. Responsible for developing, implementing, and stewardship of the capital and operations budget. 8. Remain current on emerging technologies and trends; evaluate their potential impact on the organization. 9.

Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical University senior leadership stakeholders and be able to make sound decisions that align with the overall technology strategies and plans. 10. Manage relationships with third-party vendors and service providers, ensuring the organization always moves forward and improves.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 12 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Eight years of experience at the managerial level.

Position Focus:

This role will serve as the Leader of Yale's Center for Research Computing (YCRC) and will report jointly to the Vice Provost for Research and the Vice President for Information Technology and Campus Services. This position provides strategic vision for and serves as the head of research computing technology support for Yale University. This role will lead Yale Center for Research Computing and works in close collaboration with central IT and distributed IT leaders, research cores, centers, and institutes to operate and develop new and emerging computing technologies for faculty and research groups across all university academic units.

Acts as a foremost technologist responsible for supporting existing and emerging needs of Yale's research communities. Oversees daily operations of existing research computing technology support services, including high-performance computing, computational translation, and consultative services, cloud services, research storage, research networking, and research data centers on and off campus, including Yale's emerging footprint at Massachusetts Green High-Performance Computing Center.

Manages services through fact-based measurement, service level definitions, sound financial practices, security policy, and effective user-focused and faculty-centric governance processes. Maintains a faculty-centered lens to service definition, assuring institutionally integrated service offerings responsive to emerging technology opportunities, broad institutional needs, and discipline-specific requirements in alignment with Yale's academic priorities. Transcends institutional complexities to ensure integrated service delivery and speed time to science through effective collaboration with diverse service providers and emphasizes coordination and rationalization.

Responds to evolving regulatory requirements in close partnership with relevant provostial, information technology, security, legal, and privacy offices. Acts as a trusted thought leader, establishing a clear vision for research computing technology support at Yale. Maintains relationships first and foremost through effective service delivery, supplemented with a compelling and strategic long-term view and the ability to work effectively in a highly decentralized environment to deliver high-quality research computing products and services through influence and compelling business case development.

Fosters strong outcome-centric relationships with academic departments and research centers to ensure solutions aligned with the requirements of our diverse research landscape. Leads and mentors a high-performing team of research technology professionals, ensuring a highly skilled, engaged, and diverse workforce aligned to accomplish outstanding results. Is an active colleague, participant, and leader in the technology community to help foster engagement, collaboration, and partnership with outside constituents and peers in existing, new, and emerging computational technologies.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Ph.D. in a science or social science discipline with a strong computational methods and data management background. 10-15 years of demonstrated experience in research computing technology support, preferably in a university context. Knowledge of emerging trends in research computing technologies.
