Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Four (4) years of full time progressively responsible experience in executive or leadership communications.

*Writing samples will be required from interview candidates. The interview process will also include completion of a timed writing assignment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related fields. Experience working with higher education, medical center, not-for-profit organization/agency or government entity.

Experience writing speeches and/or video scripts. Experience managing and maintaining distribution processes and information Library. Experience supporting an executive leader within a complex organization.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Manager, Executive Communications, reporting to the Executive Communications Officer, will be an experienced and skilled communications professional who will assist in researching, writing, and editing content for Stony Brook University's Office of the President, including external messaging, executive correspondence, briefing materials, speeches, video scripts, campus-wide messaging, thought leadership content and other deliverables that align with Stony Brook University's mission, vision, and priorities. This role supports the delivery of timely, consistent messaging across multiple communication channels and in coordination with other campus community stakeholders.

The Manager, Executive Communications will provide project management support for executive writing projects, initiatives, and processes. This individual is expected to multitask in a fast-paced environment and respond quickly and

professionally under pressure. Excellent written, interpersonal and verbal communication skills are essential; excellent judgment, as well as accuracy and care in the dissemination of information, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently, are essential for this role. The Manager, Executive Communications, is expected to work collegially, comfortably, and confidentially, including with top administrators in all areas of the University.

  • Writing/Editing:

  • Support execution of the messaging agenda of the President, maintaining a thorough understanding of institutional priorities and creating an appropriate cadence of deliverables. This includes research, project management, writing/editing support for

external messaging, campus-wide messaging, video scripts, talking points, speeches and briefing materials, and other presidential communications and initiatives.

  • Project and Systems Management:

  • This role will manage and maintain review and distribution processes to ensure efficient and strategic cadence of presidential messaging, analyze and implement process improvements as needed, and manage/maintain an information library (print and online) that provides reference materials to support current and future presidential messaging development.

  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
