Exceptional Children's Bus Monitor
Purpose: To monitor student behavior and attend to the special needs of students with unique health care needs while they are using school buses. The employee receives detailed instruction of the duties and responsibilities of this work and/or follows an established plan of care or emergency action plan developed by the school nurse. The employee serves under the direct supervision of the assistant principal or site supervisor.
Essential Job Duties:
Assists the bus driver with the safety, movement, management and care of assigned children boarding the school bus, leaving the bus or being transported.
Administers basic first aid in case of emergency or in accordance with assigned student(s) emergency action plans and care plans.
Follows healthcare plan for students with special medical conditions and needs.
Is familiar with and follows child pick-up and release protocols.
Seats self in an area on the bus to ensure direct observation of assigned passengers at all times.
Operates special equipment, assistive devices, or special occupant restraints and attends annual staff development for the same.
When working on a school bus equipped with a wheelchair lift, operates the lift for loading and unloading of wheelchairs and ensures that the wheelchair is properly secured on the bus.
Is responsible for properly securing students who ride in child restraint seats, etc.
Attends school bus safety meetings and medical staff development meetings.
Ensures that a child takes his/her belongings with him/her when departing the bus.
Assures that children are released to designated adult supervision.
Assists the driver when the bus is backing up and checks traffic for the bus driver. Gives the driver the okay when backing can be done safely.
Assists the school bus driver in reporting infractions of school bus safety
Performs other duties and responsibilities as delegated by the school nurse and assigned by supervisor.
Reports all incidents or safety concerns to the site manager immediately.
Requirements:
High School Diploma,
Must be able to:
Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions.
Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
Use a variety of measuring devices
Observe general surroundings and activities
Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
