Definition
Supervise and evaluate day-to-day operations of the Evidence Vault; plan, prioritize, schedule, organize and maintain the workflow of vault operations. Recommend and assist with implementing section goals and objectives; develop and implement section policies and procedures. Assist in administering the evidence management system, and the property and evidence in custody of the LVMPD. Evaluate personnel performance; work with employees to correct deficiencies; develop and maintain training programs for Evidence Vault employees. Develop, maintain, and coordinate training programs for police recruits, police officers and other investigative personnel. Identify and review resource needs; develop recommendations and monitor budget expenditures. Establish schedules and methods for providing services; conduct quality-control audits and research; compile information; develop recommendations. Verify accuracy of and deposit large sums of money impounded as evidence and work with the Accounting Section to reconcile deposits; work with the U.S. Treasury concerning counterfeit, mutilated, and altered bills. Identify and select items eligible to purge. Coordinate with the Office of General Counsel to create and submit the legal documents necessary for the final disposition of all property; coordinate large-scale operations to dispose of dangerous weapons, controlled substances, and other contraband. Coordinate activities with other government agencies. Evaluate and monitor Evidence Vault facilities, evidence drop locations, equipment, and access points; coordinate with the Facilities Section and vendors to address any functionality and safety concerns. Monitor and address operational security; coordinate with the Safety Detail to monitor and address occupational safety. Testify in court. Respond to inquiries and complaints from citizens and department employees. Perform other duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This position serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff and is not subject to the competitive requirements of the Civil Service Rules of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions
Best Candidates Will Have
Four years of full-time professional work experience in either police evidence or private sector warehouse and storage operations, and a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field; or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
The ability to work under pressure, remain calm, and meet deadlines while paying attention to details.
The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
The ability to maintain cooperative relationships and manage conflict with peers, subordinates, superiors, members of other law enforcement agencies and the general public.
The ability to give clear and concise written and oral instructions.
The ability to communicate effectively, including public speaking.
The ability to convey evidence impound and management information in an understandable manner.
The ability to write, maintain, review, and update technical and management manuals.
The ability to ensure adherence to established section and department procedures.
The ability to identify technical problems, propose remedial actions, and verify their implementation.
The ability to lead personnel, evaluate personnel performance and work with them to correct deficiencies; develop and maintain training programs for Evidence Technicians and other support staff.
The ability to monitor resource needs, develop recommendations and monitor budget expenditures.
The ability to write and oversee grants.
The ability to be on call and respond when warranted.
Strong computer skills and experience with a variety of computer applications, including SAFE, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Environmental conditions:
Office and warehouse environment; exposure to and work in confined spaces, heights on ladders and mezzanine, extreme cold arising from working inside walk-in refrigerators, extreme heat, dust arising from working in a warehouse, and inclement weather conditions if working outdoors; unpleasant odors arising from biological decomposition, drugs and drug paraphernalia, and normal biological conditions; noise found in the evidence warehouse; urban and rural traffic and road conditions while transporting evidence; demanding conditions while handling evidence items like human tissues and fluids, weapons, and other disturbing evidence allegedly used to commit violent crimes; elevated occupational risks and discomforts which require extra safety precautions be taken.

If you successfully complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam. A polygraph examination can be stressful and may affect existing medical or psychological conditions or ongoing treatment. The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete. You must also meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards.
